How? Jones fought tomato cans for a very large chunk of his career. This is pretty well known.

Tyson is ridiculous for this. He had like a 4 year window where he had an argument for it, but he was mediocre at best after that.

That is a 100% myth. Aside from the obvious Bernard Hopkins and James Toney(arguable the 2 best wins of the time fram). He toyed with real champions like Thulani Malinga, Reggie Johnson, and Virgil Hill. Even his average opponent was much tougher than the average opponent for almost everybody else on the list.

Oh and I can't stop laughing at the guy who says most people don't know boxing then mentions Joe freaking Calzaghe.

He beat Roy at a time when anybody with a pulse was KOing him, that is about as significant as William Joppy beating Roberto Duran. The Hopkins fight was a terrible decision, Hopkins won that fight.

Come on bro. Those guys weren't prime beasts when Jones beat them.

He has never fought at 165. He's fought at 154 twice.
There are plenty of 5'10 dimes that weigh 150

Exactly. Roy made them look like shite but they were legit title holders

Malinga was an African fighter with no amateur career who turned pro in his mid 20s so age is obviously deceiving. Malings won his next 6 fights after getting knocked out by Jones including winning a championship beating the great Nigel Benn who was unstoppable at the time. If that wasn't his prime when the heck was it?

Johnson was a light heavyweight champion who had 3 defenses obviously still Reggie Johnson's prime.

Virgil Hill was the best light heavyweight of the 90s and was well in to his 40s when Roy fought him. Hill was slightly past his prime but as good as he was that's still a great win.

Tyson could have been an all-time great. He was his own worst enemy. As soon as he fired Kevin Rooney -- his last link back to Cus D'amato -- the downward spiral began.

He already has, smart guy.

Jones was 35 when he got knocked out by Tarver, whch was the beginning of the end.

Mayweather is 35.

Think first. Then post.

i'm no boxing expert, but it seems that fighting bigger fighters will wear you out and end your career faster

It would take me a while to break the many ways the above is abjectly wrong.

Let's start with the big ones:
- where the hell is Mayweather?
- where the hell is Lennox Lewis? He was a better heavyweight than Holyfield every single day of the week.
- Michael Spinks? Hell, why not Leon Spinks?
- Pac but not Mayweather? That's silly.

What is this in reference to?

Jones?

If so, no. That isn't the answer.

Here is the answer:
Jones was a great great fighter, but he was purely a speed fighter. He wasn't nearly as technical as Mayweather. As such, Mayweather will still be a great fighter when his speed declines a little bit. But with Jones -- who didn't even throw jabs; he was completely reliant on his athletic ability -- once his speed declined even a little bit, he was done. Done and done.

This is always said about any fighter who is truly truly dominant, and just in another stratosphere from everybody else.

People make this argument about Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali and his 9 (or was it 10) title defenses in the 60s. He was making Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Ernie Terrell, George Chuvalo, Cleveland Williams, and Zora Folley (among others) look like absolute amateurs. It doesn't mean those guys were tomato cans. It just means that in the 60s, Clay/Ali was on a different planet as far as boxing ability was concerned.
