I am currently looking for an apt in NYC. Have a steady full time, plus a part time for extra cash. For those of you in NYC, or other major metro areas, how much (%) of your yearly paycheck are you spending on rent? I am looking in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Just want to get an idea. Thanks!

No car needed, which is nice, but don't go over 40% if you can avoid it.
Also, suck it up and live in Manhattan.
3k for a 1BR.

40% is a good number. When I first moved in I was going about 50% not including bonus.
The most expensive areas are Greenwich Village, Soho, Upper East Side, and spots here and there. Brooklyn's not bad, especially if you're close to the subways (specifically the L, your communte won't be bad at all).
Best advice is to go Manhattan at first because you're going to go balls out regardless in Manhattan. After you calm down a little bit go to Brooklyn.

Most of my friends in Manhattan spend 1500-2000 or so. Theyre all young investment bankers who spend like 7 hours a day there though.

That's not bad, I had to go 1850 when I first moved up here.
If you're looking for the best neighborhoods, then go (in order of personal preference).
1. East Village
2. Nolita
3. Soho
4. West Village

We pay 2300 base rent for 750 sqft 1 BR in DC. I figured NYC would be worse.

You must be living dead center of Georgetown or a few blocks from Capitol Hill I'm assuming?

My buddies dad had a condo in south Manhattan, by the capital building. He said its 3500 a month for an efficiency.

Wow, where in the hell are you living in DC?
I lived on East Capital right behind the SCOTUS and my rent was about $800 cheaper for the same size apt

Downtown...about 4 blocks from the white house. Been a fun 2 years but we about to have a kid and will be moving to Arlington or Alexandria to get more space

Alexandria is just as expensive, especially the nicer areas surrounding King St. If you ride the metro a lot you won't have a lot of choices in that area.
Arlington rocks though. A bunch of my friends live in the Ballston/Courthouse area and I love going out there.

How much do you make a year and I will tell you what you can afford.
If you want best bang for buck, then choose somewhere in western Queens. Also expect to have a roommate in Manhattan unless you are a baller or want to live in a tiny tiny studio.

They either are living in small crappy studios or have three people in a converted 2 bedroom. 1500-2000 a month does not go far at all in Manhattan.

You need to consider moving to NWA.
You could have this house for that much money a month.
4600 sq ft in Fayetteville.
or this
Those two houses are considered expensive as hell and for the extremely wealthy.
A decent starter home will run you $700 to $1100 a month.

But you live in Northwestern Arkansas.

That's a good thing. The rest of the state is shitty though.
Most transplants that move in for corporate jobs here never leave even when they're done working.

I'm just saying, you understand this is a to each his own thing right? Like I personally have zero interest in owned a 5000 sq foot house, but I would JIMP at a 1100 sq ft condo in Manhattan.
