FWIW Saban is correctly recognized as a premiere coach who identifies outstanding talent and coaches great defenses.
But it is kinda striking that the safety position is one where a couple of his big name guys seem to go through his system and emerge with poor coverage skills - here I refer to Laron Landry and Mark Barron
Edit - removed roman harper - he sucks in coverage but that's not on saban

This is when I realized Barron had 1st Round Potential.
The guy has amazing ball skills, he's not near the reach Bruce was.
How can you call Harper an NFL bust?!? He's got a super bowl ring and has been an NFL starter for a number of years. So of the 2 you mentioned 1 was a bust one has been a prolific safety and Barron will be as well.

Irvin had game-changing potential as a pass rusher
even if Barron is the best box safety in the NFL, he won't be a game-changer, or that great over average replacement

Harper never played for Saban, and didn't Landry only play for Saban 2 years?

my mistake on harper not playing for Saban, I thought he had played fewer years for the Saints than he has
As a guy who rooted for LSU and Laron Landry - and was frustrated by his going for a big hit instead of playing smarter (playing the ball) I inferred a similarity between Harper and Landry where there was none... that was a compelling story for me as a Saints fan because holy frick has Harper been frustrating to watch in coverage
I'll edit out Harper
But yeah, I look at Barron and think he gets burned in coverage - I guess some guys are just that way (whatever their background) because they go for a big play and whiff

Examples?
preferably in GIF form? I think this is just a ranter opinion without any proof to back it up.

people such as helpful auburn fans have already made mention of these earlier in the thread

Not that I want to get more invested into this argument, but isn't it a good thing that people can only name less than 10 times he screwed up in 4 years of college?

bleh
I don't care guys, I think he's over-rated and as a Saints fan I was glad the Bucs picked him instead of someone else that would have been more of a game changer for them
Its just an opinion. I watched TR and was instantly impressed - pretty much "frick, that guy is good and this sucks for us".
For the amount of attention Barron got I just felt the opposite way about him. Certainly he is worth drafting and no player is perfect... but I just look at him and think he's a guy who isn't world class for his speed, world class for his tackling, or world class for his coverage. When you get a top ten pick I feel like you can do better

Thank You
Lot of wrong LSU fans in this thread. I will be taking apologies. Start the line to the left please.

LSU is my team, but I don't think I commented on Barron's ability in this thread.
He seemed to be a great pick for the Bucs. I'm not sure if I got the number right, but I think he was close to 100 tackles in his rookie season.
Solid performance.

S: Mark Barron, Buccaneers: Not a great season for the first-round pick, but he's at a position that isn't populated with impact rookies. He'll have to get better to live up to his expectations.
a ringing endorsement, if I've ever read one... he was top two out of how many starting rookie safeties in the NFL?.. two?...

Wow, first team all rookie at safety. Pretty lofty expectations.

The second safety spot was much more difficult to decide, but Barron makes the team despite some bumps along the way. He found himself out of position at times in coverage, and he certainly could have done a better job of tackling as he missed 13. Barron did show his playmaking ability, however, as he deflected seven passes and came in at ninth in Run Stop Percentage at 8.4.

looks like PFF put him on their all rookie team too. Not exactly the most encouraging words though, notice the bolded portion.

sounds like barron's on pace for what most expect him to be.... a solid NFL player, but nothing special. He could make a nice 2nd year bump in production, though... but sounds like he's still a bit of a liability in coverage.

Look at it this way, he's going to be the 3rd best DB on his team next year.
