I believe Alford's son will be a senior in high school next year in New Mexico and will be a highly recruited basketball player. I doubt Alford is in play for at least a year.
He's also in a situation where they don't have any money to raise him. UNM is undergoing the same budget cuts LSU has dealt with, plus their football program is a major drag on the athletic department since they suck so badly.
Coming in at $1.8 or $2 mil might very well move him even with his kid being a senior. We ought to at least make him say no.

The dude got Kirk Hinric and Nick Collison to commit to Iowa State.
He took Iowa State to the Elite 8 before that.
He gets incredible talent everywhere he goes and wins.
Sure, he's got the sketchy element to him, but that's what you need to win the recruiting war nowadays.

In comparison to the other coaches mentioned in this thread (Jones as the exception), nothing warrants offering the job to Alford. He can't handle coaching at a BCS school.

Johnny is an X LSU guy and I always support guys who played for us and he's had a nice run lately, but the fact that in like 11 years he's been unable to win the SBC and most years he hasn't done better than 3 or 4 in his division of the Belt really is a pretty big warning flag. imo
X LSU guy or not, I'm gonna be pretty disappointed if we have go that route.
I have no clue who Joe has his sights on, but I hope he's a tireless recruiter and kinda young.

Yeah an Ex LSU guy who was a contributor in getting us on probation.

If Johnny Jones gets hired, you will know for 100% sure that Alleva didn't make the hire.

He can win at small schools but did you see him at Iowa? He sucked. He was terrible.
He's put New Mexico into the Top 10 late in the regular season twice in the last three years. It would appear to me that he's learned something since he was at Iowa.
But let's analyze how badly he sucked at Iowa.
Here's Alford, and below him is what's happened there since he left (and let's not forget that Lickliter was the guy who won big at Butler before Iowa hired him)...
2000 Steve Alford 14-16 6-10 T-7th
2001 Steve Alford 23-12 7-9 T-6th
2002 Steve Alford 19-16 5-11 T-8th
2003 Steve Alford 17-14 7-9 T-8th
2004 Steve Alford 16-13 9-7 4th
2005 Steve Alford 21-12 7-9 7th
2006 Steve Alford 25-9 11-5 T-2nd
2007 Steve Alford 17-14 9-7 T-4th
2008 Todd Lickliter 13-19 6-12 8th
2009 Todd Lickliter 15-17 5-13 10th
2010 Todd Lickliter 10-22 4-14 T-9th
2011 Fran McCaffery 11-20 4-14 10th
This year they were 18-17 and 8-10 in the league.
I'd say Iowa was a hell of a lot more competitive with Alford there than they've been since he left. What he was at Iowa was middle-of-the-pack; everywhere else he's been he's won big-time.
Alford's career...

Fran is Building that program back up. He was mediocre at Iowa. I don't want him at LSU. Just my opinion. He brings nothing to the table.
Posted on 4/7/12 at 11:51 pm to BigBoyTiger
He had a few decent years at Iowa. I feel like we could do better.
Posted on 4/7/12 at 11:53 pm to BayouBengals03
The key word is decent. To me it's mediocrity. We can do much better

This cannot be emphasized enough. He is definitely my #1 choice for the job.

And UNT was horrible before he was hired. Not bad but horrible! I don't think he would be the best hire but he might be the best we can get at this time.

I don't think Alleva can afford to hire Johnny Jones. It would be an uninspiring hire, coming right after striking out with his other hire. He's got to make an impression with this hire.
We shelled out good money to get Nikki Caldwell... don't see why we won't for men's.

I could live with Alford. His supposed failure at Iowa is greatly exaggerated. He's a good coach and recruiter.

According to a tiger rag article by Ben Love, Trent recommended Jones to Alleva. Talked about how him and Jones are good friends. If Trent is recommending him then I say HELL NO. Also the article says Trent is gonna make $2.3million.
