The lack of Stannis' daughter Shireen is quite a big liberty the writers of the show will need to get creative with later on. The rumors of her and the court fool, Greyscale being such a big deal in the 5th book...
Well, they can easily leave out the rumors without any major loss, so the only possible impact would be if MArtin did something related to greyscale at the wall in book 6 or 7, which is a long way off for the show and they could probably introduce a new character to solve it. Shireen has little to do with anything, and the fool is only useful for a few bits of prophecy, which isn't needed in the show.
The only real problem I see with Stannis being childless is it makes him a bit of an arse taking out his brother for the throne, as he would have no heirs to pass it on to anyway.

If they need her for the plot, it is a simple thing to introduce the character later. Did the show have anything about Stannis being childless?

It's weird how they're changing the motivations of so many characters. First they flipped the Ned Cat convo in the first season about who wanted Ned to be the hand, then they flipped the Cat Robb convo in the past episode about where Cat should go, and now they are changing who brought Mel in. Unless they are trying to separate their art from Martin's, I don't really get the point.

I dont think anyone gets the point. This is the same argument that people are constantly making regarding adaptations of books, why change a good thing?

I definitely got the impression that its going to play a role at some point.

well seeing the reaction Stannis' daughter got at the wall, I would say greyscale will be a gig deal to come.

not looking for details of ep. 2 spoilers, but does it look like they're giving Arya's storyline the screen time it deserves? Are they at least setting up to do so in future episodes?

Well episode 5 is entitled Ghosts of Harenhall and from what I've read on westeros.org she has some superb scenes in episodes 3 and 4.

Is anyone else concerned with what they are going to do with Jaime this season? I just don't have any idea how they are going to make the timelines fit by moving up his ASOS events to this season.

they should show his attempted escape that is only discussed off-screen in the books, but are they really moving up his release by Cat to around the middle of this yr as rumored?

Meh, I disagree.
But you should probably edit your post. Definitely discusses spoilers past CoK.

I've thought of this and its hard to discuss what they would do with Jamie without getting into book 3 spoilers.
I'm trying to remember where exactly book 2 ends with his storyline and all I can remember is that him Ser Cleos and Brienne have escaped Riverrun.
I dont know how they could escalate his storyline without the others as well.

I'm not. There are so many plots in ACOK that are going to be addressed that moving the timeline up one a few won't make that big of a difference. That's why I wasn't shocked to see Craster in the first episode even though that event takes place 200 pages into the book. Jon's plot is ACOK is huge and full of a lot of detail that can't be left out, so they are going to move through his story quickly. Plots like Dany's and Rob's - which have less going on - will probably move more slowly.
