What is the best food thermometer

for purposes of measuring temperature of the food in a smoker? Should I go ahead and get a remote thermometer so I don't have to lift the lid while it's cooking? Amateur questions, I know, but I'd like to get going on the right foot!
thanks.
thanks.

This is perhaps the best sixty bucks I've spent. It has not only a food thermometer but a grill/pit probe too, so you can not only monitor the food temp, but also the pit temp as well (both at the same time). Furthermore, you can set limits on both and have it beeps if the pit temp falls below or above your pit levels. It also will alert you when your food temp hits.
Here's the kicker though, which is what makes this unit far superior: Unlike other thermometers, this one withstands up to 700 degrees and the remote has a range of 300 feet!
If you get this model, make sure that it's indeed the 732 and not the older 730 model. The older model has less range and doesn't quite handle the high heat.
I recently got a new grill and it's great for telling me the temps, especially with indirect heat.
I'd recommend this unit to anyone.
