.22 purchase

First gun I ever owned was a Winchester pump .22 and that was the only .22 I ever needed for squirrel and rabbit hunting. I'm looking to make a semi-auto .22 purchase for plinking and to eventually pass down. I've done pretty extensive research on the subject. I've narrowed it to a marlin 60 or a ruger 10/22. Apparently the marlin has been around longer, is more accurate out the box, and cheaper than the ruger. I realize you can practically turn a 10/22 into an AR but im going to build one eventually chambered in 5.56 so..
Opinions on the above? And one more question. I'd like to throw a decent cheap scope on the .22. Not looking to spend a lot. Recommendations?

Sounds like you answered your question. If you are just plinking, Marlin is great. I have a Ruger because I want to be able to buy large aftermarket magazines so I can fire more rounds before reloading.

I have the Marlin and wish I had the Ruger.

Ruger, just because you can do pretty much anything to it and make it your own.

I have both and enjoy the 10/22 much more.
I changed the stock and the barrel and put a 4-12x40 bass pro special and it can hit a mosquito in the arse at 100yds.
The magazines are why I like he 10/22 more than the tube fed 60.

Again... I'm going to build an actual AR.

Now the clipazines I can understand. But again, why spend $220 on a .22 and then an additional $100-$200 to make it as accurate as a marlin with a scope?
And no opinions/suggestions on a scope.

I don't see what building an AR has to do with this.

Gotcha. Thanks for the explanation. I bring up the AR because in this tactacool age, when anyone says "customize" or "make it their own" that's 99% of the time what they are referring to.

I use mine for squirrels, so any changes would be along those lines.

I prefer the tube magazine on the marlin. Just my preference. They are both great guns and youll be happy with either

I have a Glenfield 60 (same as Marlin), a Remington 597 and a Ruger 10/22.
The 60 is the tackdriver but is picky about ammo.
Reloading is slow of course, because it is tube fed.
The 10/22 eats anything you feed it and is accurate enough. More aftermarket stuff than you can shake a stick at.
The 597 is the easiest to re-load and operate, fairly accurate, a little picky about ammo, but not too bad.
All three have their strong points and I like all three guns. If I had to pick one, it would be the 10/22. It is the most reliable of the bunch and feels more "solid" than the other two.

ruger 10/22 dual gatlin gun. It's fun to shoot, gonna get one sometime this summer.

Can't go wrong with a ruger 10/22 there are tons of after market options and they are super reliable. If you want something different H&K just came out with a .22lr MP5 in the $500 range. I really want one bad

The ease of conversion has me sold. Watched a show where a guy made a run through one of the big shops. Not Midway, but one like that. Turned two used beaters into a hunter and target gun respectively. Looked like a cool thing to do. If i was not so bent on getting a Mach 2, I'd probably try and find the cheapest used one in town and hit up one of those stores.

I don't know much about them, other than I know for sure the 10/22 has high capacity magazines. That would be my deciding factor.
I kick myself every day for buying the Savage model 64. It's fun to shoot, but reloading 10 rounds at a time is a pain in the arse. There isn't a huge after-market of accessories, so no high cap magaclips for me.

Try and find a good used Remington Speed master.. It is the Cadillac of .22s. I have Marlins, Rugers, and that Speedmaster is the most accurate, cleanest cycling, best built one.
PS. My old Marlin 39A Lever Action is sweet as hell too.
