Biggest problem with recruiting at LSU is QB

We have not had a decent high school QB recruit who has materialized, since Miles got here.
(1) Ryan Perriloux (5-star 2005) -- Kicked off
(2) Jarret Lee (4-star 2007) -- Enough said
(3) Russell Shepard (5-star 2009) -- Went to WR and oblivion
(4) Zach Lee (4-star 2011) -- Left to play baseball
It is incredible, we are premier program we have won 4 SEC titles in the last 11 years, 2 NC, 2 Sugar bowls and averaged 10 games a season without just 2 decent QB.
But then I mean who would want to play QB at LSU. We are run-only offense at the moment in a college football era of spread and pass happy offense.

and Linebacker for that matter have always been the achilles heel for Louisiana recruiting...

It's funny that under Crowton everyone was mad becasue we didn't have an identity. Now under Stud/Krag we develop an identity as a running team and everyone is mad that we are a run-first team.
What would you rather have? Our stable of RBs or a good QB?
I would rather the stable of RBs. Lee showed this year you don't have to be a Peyton Manning to be successful in our offense. You just have to be smart. That was with the passing aspect of our offense having the reigns pulled because of fear of T.O.
We all know that the QB situation wasn't stellar here for the past 3 years, We all have fatih in Mett. Let's see what happens this year. If they get comfortable with Mett slining it and the offense opens up, then we will get the QB recruits.

I'd rather whatever it takes to get a decent QB.

How many of those offenses that are spreading out and throwing on every down are winning National Championships each year? Just sayin'.

WVU, Oregon, Oklahoma State, Boise, etc.
We beat TWO of those type teams and played in an NC.......move along and be happy.

You forgot Jordan Jefferson on your list of failures.

This. QB recruits look at the last three years and find it hard to believe that LSU will actually throw the ball. We threw it more with Russell and Flynn, but to these recruits that's ages ago. All they have to go on is the passing attack that's been one of the worst in the country the last few years. As stho381 says, Mettenberger throwing it around could change the mind of prospects viewing the program. We don't have to be Texas Tech; just win and have a balanced attack and it will be more attractive to the throwers.
It also doesn't help that Louisiana has run dry as far as high school passers is concerned. The OOS passers are more likely to stay closer to home (Kiel) if they have a chance to throw it a bit in a good program, rather than travel across state lines to hand it off. We have to develop a semblance of a passing game to attract those types.

Call me crazy, but I was never excited about the Gunner commit. We don't need more drama at the QB position this year. This kid seemed entitled from the start. We've got three legit QB prospects on this roster, and maybe a 4th. If you think Randall is simply JJ 2.0, look again. This kid has incredible potential. If Miles doesn't turn him into Shep 2.
Also is Jared Foster buried on the depth chart? this kid is a winner. Is he even getting a shot?
Next year's class will need a qb. For now we're fine.

There doesn't seem to be a real willingness on the staff (starting at the top) to learn on offense. You never hear about these guys seeking out advice or going to camps with Pro OCs or HCs. They're just determined that they know it all and their way is he best way. When you watch LSU's QBs operate at the line of scrimmage, it's apparent they haven't been taught how to properly audible, and equally as important, how to dummy audible. When was the last time you ever saw an LSU QB use a pump fake on a double move (out-and-up, stop-and-go, post-corner, etc). I hope some of this changes under Kragthorpe, but I won't hold my breath just yet.
Just a lot of complacency.. or at least apparent complacency. Send these guys to Manning camps. Go spend a week with Harbaugh. Something.

05 Texas
06 Florida
08 Florida
10 Auburn
So 4 of the last 7, plus Oregon 10, Texas 09, OU 08 were all in the BCS CG ran variations of the spread.
Personally I don't care about the "spread" and its a grossly over used and misunderstood term you don't need to pick between pass every down or run up the middle every down. I'd prefer a prostyle offense with a QB that can throw down the field, like Miami in their heyday or USC under Carroll, or LSU with Russell.
Balance prostyle attack, with good QB that can throw down the field, plus sick defense is ideal. Miami 01, USC 04 for example.

LSU could win with the spread because they have the athletes.
as they say defense wins championships and offense puts asses in the seats. What's wrong with having both? With our recruiting we should have both

A lot of those teams are "spread" teams. But, I didn't say how many spread teams are winning NC's each year, I said how many "pass happy" offenses are winning NC's every year, since that was the term you used in the OP. And, the answer is would probably have to be none. The last really pass happy team I can remember winning the NC would be Texas.
Unless you want to say UF in 06 and 08, but even then, I would say those weren't pass happy offenses.
My thoughts exactly. Hopefully that's what we will see with Mett next year.

All of these had FREAK QB's.........that don't come around often. i WILL agree that LSU would be unbeatable with an efficient QB who could make throws downfield.
Our WR's were open all night against Bama and JJ could not see em.

None of those teams were "throw first" teams... but maybe I'm misunderstanding the question.

Really? Having a decent QB is the ultimate? Not playing for championships? Then become a Houston fan. They apparently get very good QB's...but we were in the championship game.

Of all those teams you listed, sure they were spread teams, but they were option style run first teams with mobile QBs.
The reason we don't recruit well at QB and LB usually is simple, La doesn't produce them, and it's not easy to go OOS and land top flight guys, see Gunner Keil.
