Mayweather and Pacquiao had a phone conversation last night about a future fight

Floyd Mayweather Jr., who for the past two weeks has been relentlessly calling for fellow welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao to fight him on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, raised the chase to a new level on Wednesday night -- he called Pacquiao on the telephone and spoke directly with him in the Philippines.
"They spoke," Leonard Ellerbe, one of Mayweather's advisers, told ESPN.com on Thursday.
However, Ellerbe would not go into the particulars of the call -- what was said or how long they spoke.
"Floyd called him last night and the context of the conversation is between the two of them," said Ellerbe, who said Mayweather told him the specifics after making the call but did not want Ellerbe to go into details.
However, in an interview with a Filipino television network, Pacquiao also said that they spoke and that it was about making the fight and doing it on a 50-50 purse split.
Their proposed showdown looms as the richest fight in boxing history if it takes place while both are universally considered the two best fighters in the world.

This is the boxing equivalent of Russell Shepard throwing a pass

Lol.
This will happen. Both actually have more to lose if they don't fight. Mayweather realizes this now, I think.

Really hope so. I'm not a big boxing fan in general, but the hype for this will be awesome.

Yes but the fight itself is an unbelievable mismatch.
Lots of hype, but very predictable outcome.

must have been an intelligent sounding conversation

Mayweather already has a scheduled bout on May 5th (no opponent scheduled as of yet). BUT.. Pacquiao wants the fight in late May. they also want a 40,000-capacity arena built for the fight.
too many stipulations on both sides for this to ever happen.

The judge delayed Mayweather's report to jail to fulfill his scheduled bout for May 5th. I think there's a slight chance it can happen then with Pacquiao.

It will happen in 15 years in the "Champions Boxing League" like when McEnroe and Bourg now play at the Boca Raton Tennis Club.

"There is no fight I want more than the Manny Pacquiao fight," Mayweather told the gathered media. "I guess he said he agreed to fight. The only thing that is stopping this fight right now, that I truly believe is stopping the fight, is Bob Arum."

I can only imagine. I'd love to hear a recording of it. I just imagine Mayweather talking in 3rd person the whole time and Pac saying "Si, Si", even though he isn't Spanish.... That would be some funny shite.

Must have been a scholarly conversation. I hope someone recorded it.

I'll give you a synopsis.
Mayweather: I heard you don't want to fight me.
Pacquiao : I heard you don't want to fight me.
Mayweather: Jinx.
Pacquiao : Jinx.

The interesting thing about this story is how much it resembles the Ultimatum Game (psychology experiment)
The Game:
Given that boxers are guys motivated by pride and anger I think they would be highly likely to reject unequal splits if they feel they are a fighter of equal stature
And in fact I think Mayweather wanting an unequal split is not just simply thinking he deserves it because he is a better draw... it is probably also gamesmanship. The first steps to intimidating another fighter are mental and getting the other fighter to accept less money than you will get could be viewed as getting him to admit he is a lesser fighter
The Game:
quote:
Imagine that you and a stranger are participating in a psychology study. The experimenter gives the stranger $20. "Divide this money between you and you partner," the experimenter tells the stranger. "You can keep any amount for yourself, and give any amount to your partner. But your partner gets to decide whether or not to accept the deal. If your partner refuses the offer, nobody gets any money, and the game is over."
quote:
Rationally, any offer is better than no offer, so people should be motivated to accept any deal. But in reality, most people are offended by obviously unfair splits. If they deem the offer too stingy, they will reject the offer to punish their partner for being selfish. It may not make sense economically, but it sure feels good.
