Macs are terrible for games.

I just built a fairly robust system (minus video card and HDD) for $440.

Don't overspend just for the sake of overspending. I did that with a build a few years ago, and got nothing out of it.

and you just named the two most expensive components in a system (with the current ridiculous HD prices)

Would still be easily under $700 for something that could run current games without issue.

What resolution is your monitor ? You have to work back from there.

Right now I have dual screen LG W2361V monitors, LCD 1080p, 50:000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio. They are about 3 years old but they still kick arse.

My current set up is a Dell Latitude E6410 on a docking station, going to dual screen monitors. I play no games on it but it's great for work because I can have dual screens here and then take home my laptop if I need it.

On a 1080P screen, to max the newest games (BF3 and Metro: Last Light) at all settings highest, I recommend no less than an ATi 7970. - $550

If you can live with a couple things not maxed, go with the 6950. - $250

For all settings "Medium", go with a 6870 - $150.

You're probably going to want to go SLI/Crossfire if you're running two monitors.

Eyefinity display groups and NV Surround don't work well with bezels right in the middle of your view ;P

I'm talking about the amount of sheer power needed to run games at high settings at that resolution on two monitors.

If you want high resolution output + high-ultra settings you are probably going to want dual-card.

I can think of one or two games that support gaming on *2* monitors (Burnout Paradise, Torchlight). As I said in my previous post, there is no point in running an Eyefinity display group across two monitors because you will have 2 bezels right in the middle of your view.

The $550 7970 can hold its own regardless.

Not for gaming. Most games are Windows and what's the point of buying the Mac just to run it as a Windows machine.

It's not very customizable and you cannot get the latest and greatest gaming graphics card for it.

My house is full of Mac stuff but for gaming I use a PC or boot my MacBook Pro into Win7 but that's a rare event.

Well, duh!

So can my 2X6970's in Crossfire and they cost less to me combined than that 7970.

I can run any current game on them at max settings.

2x6970s only cost less if you bought them used, they are $330 AR apiece right now.

2 Lesser GPUs versus 1 Higher end GPU is almost apples and oranges.

2 Lesser GPUs = Lower cost (generally) but higher power consumption and (most likely) inability to upgrade (pretty much have to jump a generation or buy 2 higher end next generation GPUs)

1 Higher End GPU = Higher cost but generally better performance (on the order of a few FPS), lower power consumption and the ability to SLI/Crossfire down the road.

I always reccommend buying 1 Higher End GPU. While it isn't that much of an issue these days, some games have an issue with SLI/Crossfire which actually causes a significant FPS loss. I also like the ability to upgrade to SLI/Crossfire down the road when future generations come out.

You guys are both correct on what you are saying.

As an aside, you can run most games on max settings at 1080p (1920x1080) with 2 6970 (or GTX 570) or 1 High end card. The resolution is so low it is not an issue. I have a 5870 and I am still running max settings on everything (OC'd). I'd just wait for Southern Islands and Kepler to release and buy the $300 range card for those resolutions.
