Ok .. Well I am saying that the ball was only awarded to the lions after the referees talked about the play. I was ten drinks in at that time but didn't the saints even try to line up and run a play
I did not watch it on tv but this article seems to agree LINK

Fair enough. All descriptions on the hoculi rule state that it is reviewable by video. I didn't think officials huddling was considered as well.
That article fails to account for the fact that the entire saints team stopped playing after the whistle and that the Detroit players themselves didn't take the ball to the end zone.

Don't think the fumble can be advanced in this situation.

Saying it should have been a TD is madness though.
Our whole team stopped pursuing the ball carrier when the whistle blew (and the play ended).
That's why it looked like the Lions should have been free to run to the endzone.

I saw the play live, and it really looked like everybody including the Lions thought that the play was dead. Everybody stopped except for the few who went after the ball.

Exactly. Not to mention all the other Saints players who would be going for the tackle!

The people crying, in particular, Falcons fans, need to give it a rest. Sure, it would have been a nice momentum swing had Detroit returned that for a TD, but they were outscored by 17 points, and the Saints could have put more on the board, not to mention the last Detroit TD was a garbage time TD when the game was out of reach at that point. That play would not have been the difference - even being early on in the game.
Let's also remember that the Saints turned it over twice, and on not one of the turnovers could the Lions get any points. I guess the refs were playing defense there?
I think it's funny the people who are crying about refs. I guess the refs left Meachum wide open, left Graham on the goal line with nobody on him, let Sproles run almost untouched into the end zone, left Henderson open streaking down the field, and couldn't tackle PT, etc. Seems to me anyone will find an excuse to say they lost for some other reason, not simply that they were outplayed. Refs are human, and calls will be missed from time to time. The refs didn't have anything to do with the outcome of that game.

With the whistle coming right away, by rule it should not have been overturned even by replay (if they would have said incomplete pass on the field). The recovery was not immediate. Whistles blew, Colston and Lions players dove for it, then it bounced out of the pile and is picked up away from that spot.
Hell of a lot of whining about a play that, given the whistle, actually screwed the Saints out of the ball.

Why is everyone forgetting the ref threw the beanbag as soon as he fumbled, it was ruled a fumble initially and then inadvertent whistle.

yep, how is the denver call different? Should be reviewable
Posted on 1/8/12 at 5:52 pm to sms151t
Yup... and the same thing just happened in the Denver game with the opposite result.
Posted on 1/8/12 at 5:54 pm to busbeepbeep
Because they called it a pass initially. The Brees play was a fumble, look how the ref threw bag as soon as ball was loose. Two different calls
Posted on 1/8/12 at 5:54 pm to busbeepbeep
Point being...the whistle ends the play
Granted it was an erroneous whistle...but the Lions shouldnt have even been given possession much lless a td for that.

Yes they should the new rule is whistle doesn't stop a fumble and ref umpire control the game.
Right call was made Detroit ball at spot of recovery.

Why didnt Denver jsut get the balll then idiot?
Posted on 1/8/12 at 6:01 pm to rondo
Damn it was ruled a pass initially. How hard is it to figure out? The Brees play was ruled a fumble by Corrente. Look at the plays, watch beanbags. It isn't hard.

It was ruled a pass by the ref that blew the whistle
