I might get flamed for this, but I'm a huge Cary Grant fan. One of my favorite films of his is Father Goose. It's not long. It's pretty light hearted, and pretty funny. Operation Petticoat is another good one.

Can't think of any off the top of my head. For me it's mostly newer movies that I just haven't gotten to see yet, like The Tree of Life or Ides of March.

Me too.

Loved Father Goose. Watch every time its on.
Cary Grant is legitimately hilarious, IMHO.

Check out "His Girl Friday" and "Bringing up Baby" if you haven't seen them.

Not by me...Grant was hilarious.

Arsenic and Old Lace is super funny, as is Philadelphia Story. The guy was simply perfect in everything he was in...

Cool Hand Luke
Chinatown
The Last Picture Show
The Last Detail
The Man Who Would Be King

I thought he was horribly miscast in North by Northwest...he's just too much of a dandy to be in that Hitchcock thriller. Just irritating in that role - over-the-top clueless and prancing about - he really turned it into a comedy - maybe that was the intention ...just never liked that movie because of him.

But, he was good in Charade, Indiscreet and The Talk of the Town.

not that many essential 'canon' lists ever mention it, but Soy Cuba is one of the most underappreciated classics of all time.

quote:

The film was not received well by either the Russian or Cuban public and was almost completely forgotten until it was re-discovered by filmmakers in the United States thirty years later. The acrobatic tracking shots and idiosyncratic mise en scene prompted Hollywood directors like Martin Scorsese to begin a campaign to restore the film in the early 1990s.

William Powell and Myrna Loy in the "Thin Man" series of films.

I am madly in love with Myrna Loy.

He could do comedy and more serious movies and be great in both:

People Will Talk
I was a Male War Bride

Are just two of my favorites from Grant.

You have some good ones to catch up to, although I feel Apocalypse Now is way overrated. I have a hard time making it through it in one sitting because I'm bored most of the time.

I recommend Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Paul Newman and Liz Taylor back in their primes.

Someone else mentioned Arsenic and Old Lace. I agree.
