For the record I'm not hating on the Beatles. I'm not going to argue that they were not the greatest songwriters, musicians, etc. It's pretty obvious what they've accomplished and their mark on the landscape.
But right now I'm jamming to Black Sabbath to get my day going!!!

The Nickelback of hip hop. It amazes me that people can hear these incredibly crappy rock bands on the radio and know there is good rock n roll out there that's just not getting as much exposure, but can't make the same connection with rap
yeah, i was thinking more:
People Under the Stairs
Common
Surreal & The Sound Providers
A Tribe Called Quest
Mos Def
Jurassic 5
even, Digable Planets - Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space), was kind of a "one album wonder", but a great album never-the-less.

I agree 100% but it also kind of irks me when people call The Beatles pop considering that most of the people out there think of pop as Britney Spears and Lady Gaga.
Don't let those people ruin it for you, some of the best music has been pop, Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. Like Leauxgan said, it's all about the hooks.

The Beatles were above and beyond anything that anyone had ever seen before them and also any thing that people will ever see after them. It was a perfect storm of a certain set of musicians in a certain time period with a certain fan base. There were better bands and musicians before them and there have been better bands and musicians after them yet no one will ever be able to come close to accomplishing what they did IMO.
If we are going to talk about the most important band in the history of music (not just rock n roll, music in general) then that honor has to go to the beatles.
I'm a Beatles fan too, but this is pouring a little too much on them, and you get the resulting backflash from the anti-Beatles folk.

I think that's still debatable honestly.

Worst thing to happen to music was the dawn of the single instead of the album
Singles came long before albums.
You could have said the best thing was the album, if you want a specific one, Pet Sounds or Sgt Peppers.

I am going to be that guy and say that mp3 format is also one of the worst things to happen to music. Yes, it revolutionized storing it and getting out to the public, but the audio quality is avg when you have very good equipment to listen to. If I enjoy an album enough that I found through file-sharing or iTunes, I will usually buy it on record or CD as well to top notch sound quality.
A very good record player matched with quality separates and speakers is a much better listening experience than mp3s and even CDs.

What other band has done the things that they did? That created the mass hysteria that they did? That every RESPECTED musician today will claim to be fans of?
I can think of no one else.
