Seems, just from recollection, to have occurred around 2000 or so. The 90s were a lot less 'yellowey' than today's unis.

LSU had old gold helmets through the Gus Tinsley years which ended in 1954. In 1955 when Dietzel was hired, the yellow gold helmets were adopted. As a matter of fact, the color became known as "Dietzel Gold" in uniform catalogues. Another interesting fact is that the GB Packers adopted the gold color as is evident today.

1956

Here is the doghsit we wore from 1947-1955:

Here is the helmet we adopted in 1956, featuring the true canary gold of our modern (and gorgeous) uniforms:

BY the time Billy made his famous run, the numbers had been added to the helmet:

Then the helmet developed roughly as depicted in the cartoonish chart posted above.

Here is our current helmet:

LSU has won all of its NC's with canary yellow helmets. They are distinctive and beautiful. We don't need to revert to a generic metallic gold.

P.S. I am not familair with the helmets we wore prior to 1946, though I presume they were leather for the majority of the first half of the century.

I say leave it how it is.

Though the color of the pants have certainly been brightened in the past several years. The pants color used to be a duller yellow.

I think purple, gold and white are great color combos...has LSU ever considered making the helmets a tad more gold? would you support such a move or leave as is?

what are you guys smoking ?

It ain't broke, don't fix it.

LSU's gold helmets are one of the most recognizable helmets.

Different / New is not better

One thing I believe Chicken is asking is if there were some changes from, say, the 1980's because the helmets appeared to be less bright yellow and a little more "golden" though certainly not the metallic gold worn by Notre Dame and many others. In other words, something a bit closer to the gold color worn by the band.

I suspect, but do not know, that the yellow/gold color is the same but that it looked a lot different in old photos/TV broadcasts. I would like to know the answer to this, too.

Don't know this for sure, but I suspect that the actual material has likely changed some and therefore the color being reproduced shows up brighter (stronger).

I like the LSU letters and current gold color.

I would NOT support a move to change the hue of the gold. I like that we wear "Old World Gold" and not the typical Notre Dame gold.

The present hue is both aesthetically pleasing and distinctive.
There's no mistaking LSU for any other team. I'm ok with a pro-combat type game every now and then, but I hope our current uniform never changes.

90s

Today

Pull up any photos from each era and you can clearly see a difference in hues.

It seems like it was more gold in the 70's but that might have been how it translated on TV back in

All of the display helmets I have seen, and who knows how authentic or how the color has faded, appear to be reasonably consistent with the color of today's helmets, although today's helmets look a little brighter than more vintage helmets.

An example can be found here (not endorsing the products, just a side-by-side comparision of a Cannon helmet and a so-called "Jones" helmet):

LINK

While the 70s helmet looks a little brighter, neither helment looks more metallic or "more gold". I believe it was a consequence of the television cameras and film pictures from the era - and I do know what you mean Chicken.

To answer your question, I am in favor of keeping things the way they are. I do like the current helmet logo over the pre-72 "Numeral" era.

I call it "bright gold" what LSU currently uses.

I prefer it. It matches with Mardi Gras "gold" and it's what I am use to seeing.

IMO, LSU has the most distinctive uniform in CFB, or atleast one of them, so no changes

FWIW I despise the Pro Combat crap but what can you do?

Uh, you've picked a completely misrepresentative picture of the current uniforms, in my estimation. There is a lot glare in that photo.

Here is a better shot from the Cotton Bowl last year taken:

Seems virtuallly indistinguishable from the 1999 photo:

Perhaps a tad lighter and glossier, but certainly not this:

LSU colors are royal purple and old gold, not lilac and canary yellow.
