Alabama:
191.33 yards per game
3.22 yards per play
7 points per game
10 Turnovers Gained
43 Tackles for Loss
8 Sacks
27.96 3rd down conversion
Average of offenses played:
323.1 ypg/87th ranked total offenses
23.85 ppg/81st ranked scoring offenses
LSU
254 yards per game
3.85 yards per play
12.5 points per game
14 turnovers gained
48 tackles for loss
13 sacks
31.52 3rd down conversion%
Average of offenses played against (eliminating NW St.):
408.42 yards per game/55th ranked total offenses
32.1 points per game/53rd ranked total offenses
How much does level of competition play into the argument? Bama destroyed a really good Arkansas offense, whereas LSU has merely "contained" the great offenses of West Virginia and Oregon.
LSU has created more turnovers and plays for loss.
Alabama has a significant advantage in yardage and points.
I know everyone is going to say LSU because this is an LSU board, but looking at the side-by-side statistical comparison, which defense would you take if say, team A was Hawaii and team B was SMU and you had no dog in the fight.

Alabama has the better defense in terms of stopping drives while I believe we have the more opportunistic defense because of Tyrann Mathieu and more playmakers on the DL.

when do they play each other?

Bama's defense is a little more stout. They're also not as fast as LSU's and LSU generates more turnovers. Also, the stats are a little skewed for LSU's D since WVU passed so much, but I would take LSU's D solely because of the turnover machine known as The Honey Badger.

You don't see the faulty logic here?
Of course Bama's opponents will have less yards per game than LSU's, because they played BAMA who is giving up less yards per game than LSU.

The problem is, people will look at one thing or another to make their claim. LSU and Bama are both great defenses, but they're very different.
LSU is fast and aggressive from front to back. Thus the sacks, tackles for loss, and turnover advantage.
Bama is STOUT. Thus the fewer yds allowed, and fewer points allowed. It also helps that they have not faced UO and WVU on the road, but the did face...and dominate...Arky.
If you've watched any Bama games, they have flashes were their defense looks like an NFL defense playing a high school JV offense. They wanna KILL the opposition. I don't think a starting QB has lasted the whole game against them yet. They hit like trucks.
LSU tends to be more aggressive, stripping the ball, intercepting the ball, etc. Also LSU's DL is so fast, we end up with a lot of TFL.

Bama stronger LSU faster.
BAMA shuts down offenses, LSU scores on offenses
LSU has to stop run, Bama has to stop pass (bc they WILL stop our run)

Does how many quarterbacks or players has each defense knocked out of the game play into the discussion? If so, Bama seems to have the edge at this point...

To me Bama is much more physical than LSU.
I think if I was a QB I would rather face LSU than Bama. Bama places a premium on hitting qb's. They get more pressure and push with their front four. Also when they bring a LB he is the same size as most DE's. LSU hasn't pressured QB's much since the WV game. No pressure on Uk or UF QB's. One would think we would have gone after a freshmen QB playing in TS. We didn't which worked effectively but the difference in the 2 defenses is bama would have gone for the kill while LSU waits for the offense to make mistakes.

I think the last drives vs. Oregon and WVU are skewing the stats a bit. We were just sitting back and like OK lets get this game over.

LSU defense will be better than bama's. Come 11-05-11 you will see why.

Oh yay! Another LSU v. Bama thread

Bama has played a Jr. High schedule, while we've had to beat several top 25 teams, including Oregon with the most explosive offense in college football. How the hell can you compare stats and get a true picture. Only November 5th is going to settle this debate.

Phelon Jones transferred because he could not crack the 2-deep at LSU. He gets PT at Bama.
No ill-will against him personally, but he's my justification to say that LSU's D is better.

This just answered the question better than me in the other thread about 03,07,11 defenses compared.
Our D in 03, to me, was more like Bama this year, methodical and shut-down. While, thanks to your stats for proof, our Defense this year is mean and flashy creating tackles for loss, sacks, turnovers.
I'll take em both. Gonna be two good defenses in Tuscaloosa FOR SURE. Gonna need The General and Jefferson both to get some points on the board.
