Should college athelets get paid: the rants perspective

What say you? Should college athletes get paid?
I think a system that pools all OOC postseason profits, then divides them equally amongst the different teams should be allowed. Taking it a step farther, I think the individual teams should take their individual cuts and give rash class (freshmen, Soph, juniors, seniors) a different pre-determined percent.
Just my opinion, what say you?
ETA: pool a PERCENT of OOC postseason profits

No school loans to pay back? They have been paid.
Posted on 3/30/11 at 10:28 pm to clownbaby
No. College players on a full scholarship get plenty of benefits that not even regular students get.

allow players to endorse products and sign deals with marketing people who aren't related to the university without risking eligibility

They are already getting their education paid for, so I say not no but HELL NO.
Yeah, they play the game, attract fans, blah blah blah. If you pay them, they lose their amateur status. Lets play them a sad song

definitely not.
how many athletic departments actually make money?
college is a sacrifice to get ahead in life.
hell, isn't LSU doing enough cutbacks? whats going to happen if they have to pay athletes?

No. In addition to all kinds of benefits, they already get free tuition, which can be in the 10 or 20K/year range for expensive out of state schools

HELL. NO. I can't even say that enough. The sheer thought that a college athlete should be paid is just sickening.
Now if they want to endorse products be on a commercial thats fine. THose external companies should be allowed to pay them. But the SCHOOL PAYING THE PLAYER?! GTFO with that nonsense!

they get free clothes, food, medical attention, publicity, tutoring. Half of them wouldn't even be at the school they are at if it wasn't for their sport

Paid for play? No
BUT something needs to be done about the select few whose Jerseys are money makers for schools and the issue of keeping NCAA athletes likeness licensed out to video game developers in perpetuity.

The only athletes that should be paid are college football players. They're forced to stay in school for at least three years. Baseball players can go pro after high school. Basketball players can leave after one year. It's unreasonable to ask some dirt poor black kid who needs to provide for his family right away to not get paid anything until after his third year in college.

quote:If you allow this, then unscrupulous boosters will pay athletes for endorsements as a way of getting around rules against paying athletes. Come to LSU and I will pay you $100,000 to endorse Joe's chicken shack on a poster, for instance.
Now if they want to endorse products be on a commercial thats fine.
IMO, college athletes get tuition, medical, promotion, and opportunity. College sports are a platform to show off what you've got for the potential employers of the future if you're inclined to go pro. But, as the commercial says, most NCAA athletes go pro in something else (I think that's what it says). They should not be paid. They should pay back if they can later on.

Not to mention tag vagina they never would have gotten without football. See Dick, Casey:

Completely disagree with this. If football should get paid immediately, then why would basketball or other sports for that matter get paid?
There should be no payment of college athletes because you could not just pay the money making sports, you would have to pay athletes for non-revenue sports, including women's sports. Those sports are already losing and not many athletic programs are turning a profit.
As far as outside marketing goes, I think this could still lead to problems even if the NCAA permitted outside marketing.

The schools shouldn't pay them, I don't see why they should not be allowed to sign with an agent

frick That
How about parents or kids stop having babies they can't afford? Kids shouldn't need to have to support families at that age.
The universities take care of every personal need of the student-athlete.
Also I am not aware of jerseys and video games with players's names licensed out to people.
The problem with sponsorships is it can't be completely separated from their smarter sport and university.

Oh boo frickin hoo cry me a river. These kids are going to this college they'd have never gone to in the first place for FREE! Why? BECAUSE THEY ARE ATHLETICALLY TALENTED!
Theres a reason these "dirt poor black kids" are so happy to be recruited by big colleges for football. They know what an opportunity it is.

That's being naive for the sake of avoiding the discussion. When they have NCAA football 2010 and it looks like Tim Tebow has his number, height weight and even correct home town it's tim Tebow.
Giving someone a college scholarship to one school shouldnt grant the NCAA a 3rd party legal rights to said likeness forever.
Try making a NFL game doing the same thing using actual NFL players likeness and see how fast you get sued

No it's not. It's QB #15. You can name him Tim Tebow if you want, or you can name him Matt Ryan or Roger Staubach or who the hell else knows.
Likenesses or not it's the name that matters.
