The way LSU uses him and should continue to use him is the same way Michigan used Charles Woodson back in the day. Some CBs are too explosive and instinctive to only play on the edge. Michigan used to play Woodson in the slot a lot and in hybrid S/CB positions so that teams couldn't just ignore him by not passing to one sideline. You want a guy like Mathieu near the ball as much as possible.

I really hope Chavis continues to have him rove around the line of scrimmage, because he is deadly off the blitz. If they keep him in coverage those sacks will disappear.

Flat out beast. The most developed freshman CB I might have ever seen at LSU. The kid is on his way to being a multiple year All-American, and dare I say better than PP7 by the end.
With him, Simon, Claiborne, Reid, Loston, etc, that secondary is going to be nasty for quite some time

Dude is fantastic and very special, plays with his hands along with his whole body. Unbelievable body control with all that quickness. Gets the big hit while keeping his head up and his hands going all at the same time.

fantastic. Rewatching this really highlights how fast to the ball that dude is. He is always right there! Fingertip interception while stretched out full-length in the air right in front of Swope against A&M was awesome but his tackle-strip-fumble recovery-td later was even better--too bad the penalty negated his score.

FANTASTIC video!! I've been going to LSU games since I was around 7 years old, so about 25 years. In all that time I don't know that I've ever looked forward to seeing what a defensive player may do next as I have when Mathieu has been out on the field.

He was the best player on the entire team this year in my opinion. I've never seen a player, much less a true freshman who really wasn't a "starter" make as many huge plays as TM did this year.
He was directly responsible for so many sacks and fumbles and INTs and huge hits on special teams and tackles behind the line and dynamic plays on defense. I've never seen a player so ferocious and so consistent in making big plays in every single game.
He's my favorite player in college football.
