So I need to stock up my liquor cabinet from scratch...

I don't drink a lot of hard alcohol, but I want to have something around in case I have some guests that want a stiff drink...what to buy?
I am guessing a Vodka, Rum, Tequila, Gin, Bourbon/Whiskey...maybe some tonic and club soda...
what brand of each type of liquor should I get?
how far out do tonic and club sodas expire?
Thanks in advance...

are we going top end here? Here are some middle of the road suggestions...
Vodka- Tito's (Made in Austin)
Rum- Appleton's is good, but Captain will serve the purpose probably.
Tequila- Don Julio is one of my favorites
Gin- Tanqueray maybe? Don't drink much gin.
Bourbon- Maybe Maker's or something? Can't go wrong with Jack either, IMO.
Some others on here might have some better suggestions.

I am no expert on rums, but I do know Sailor Jerry is far from top-shelf. Any sophisticated person would laugh at you if they saw this in your collection.

Macallan 12 year is a solid scotch for the money.

Tonic and soda definitely expire and they don't have as long a life as I would like. I've thrown more out than I care to recall, so read the expiration dates when making the purchase. Same with cold drinks. They expire and they taste like crap, shortly, thereafter.
I'd recommend getting some vermouth, as well as the bitters. I keep, on hand, cherries, olives, lemons, limes, an orange, a bloody mary mix, marinated green beans and a few other things, on hand.

WRT bourbon, Jack Daniels isn't. But it's good to have a bottle of Jack to satisfy people who think they like bourbon but really only like Jack and Coke. Jack's closest bourbon relative is Jim Beam.
Try to go off the beaten path. Everyone's had Jack and Jim, and they're boring. Jim Beam' small batch series (Bakers, Knob Creek, Booker Noe and Basil Hayden) are all seviceable bourbons - as is Woodford Reserve - and all should be easy to find. If you go to a liquor store worth it's salt you should be able to find some obscure and some small batch labels like Elmer T. Lee, Blanton's, W.L. Wellers Special Reserve, Four Roses. All of these are excellent.
Also pay attention to the proof. If the intent is to drink it neat, stay below 90-95 proof.

Well that's why i listed Pyrat. When you mix rum based drinks there is no sense in mixing anything past middle of the pack rum. if you're drinking the shite straight, go high quality. If you're just mixing it, Sailor Jerry is just fine.

Jameson is a pretty good Irish Wiskey. I keep some Cognac(Henessey) for special occasions and such. An old Gunny of mine loves the stuff so whenever he comes by that's all we drink. Keeping a couple of bottles of wine for the females isn't a bad idea either.
