Vodka - Kettle One or Absolute
Rum - Appleton or "Old New Orleans"
Tequila - Don Julio
Gin - (Don't care) unless it's in Long Island Icetea
Bourbon - Ridgemont Reserve "1792" or Woodford Reserve
Whiskey - Jameson Irish Whiskey

Just a point of order:

Everyone is mentioning some high end Tequilas here.

Keep a bottle of Torada, Sauza, or Jose Cuervo around for making margaritas and such. Those higher end Tequilas like Patron are not really for mixing.

If I am doing this and want to have the basics around for friends coming over, I will choose middle of the road things that people have heard of. You won't necessarily impress, but you won't look like a doof either. My choice is underlined.

Gin: Beefeaters or Tanqueray
Vodka: Stoli or Absolut
Scotch: Famous Grouse or Chivas
Rum: Bacardi White
Bourbon: Jim Beam or Makers Mark
Tequila: Jose Cuervo Gold

Bourbon/Whiskey

I would include

a Bourbon(Makers, WL Weller, Buffalo Trace, Old Charter) get some high end stuff later

a Tennessee Whiskey (Jack, George Dickel)

a canadian Whiskey (Crown, Forty Creek)

Irish (Jameson, Bushmills)

Scotch (Glenlivet, Johnnie Walker)

that should appease most drinkers of whiskey

Yes, you really do need one of each. There is no bigger bang for buck than Old Charter. It consistently rates with much more expensive bourbons. Any Tennessee whiskey will do, since the people that choose it over bourbon have no idea what they are doing anyway.

A few bad questions:
1. Does any liquor ever expire? I have some old tequillas in the cabinet...

2. I am guessing Margarita mix expires at some time, right? I have three Jose Cuervo margarita mix bottles in the cabinet, and I can't remember the last time I bought them...probably 3+ years...

I don't (think) so, although, I know wine does if opened. I found some old vodka in the hunting camp, probably been there since the 70's. It made some good screw drivers...

I'd bet the old tequilla's would age nicely and be pretty interesting to taste..

I'm a clear alcohol fan and like Grey Goose vodka and Bombay Sapphire Gin.
