quote:I really don't watch that much TV, but aren't there are other "good" TV shows about mysterious and magical things that eventually all do this? X-Files comes to mind. Do you feel the same way about that show?
But to have characters who know not EVENTUALLY explain it...that's just fricking with the audience.

quote:I agree and Freuxzen may have a point about the fact that they should have never let some people pretend like they "know" something that they don't really know. It doesn't really bother me all that much, but I'm not a critic. Can it be argued that it's a crutch to create mystery? Sure. Does it really matter? Not to me. There are things that the show does so well that it just doesn't get under my skin as much as it does some of you guys.
Electromagnetism and "light of good and bad" are totally different things. The mystery of the island should have never been addressed.

X-Files' problem was that it couldn't decide if it wanted to have the long overarching story or not. That pretty much ruined the last few seasons. So yes, I feel the exact same way.

Well, at least you are consistent.

The problem with all of this is that there are people we have seen who know exactly what the island does/is. The writers just avoid letting them tell us.
Just to revisit this for a second: who are you referring to exactly? As far as I know, the only people who surely know what the Island does is Jacob, MIB and Mother. Others may have come close to understanding it and others claimed they understood it when they did not...but there really aren't many who know exactly what the Island is and why it is.

Widmore and Richard know more. Maybe not everything, but more than they are telling, yes. Add Illyana, Doggen, the other Mother etc.

Froze.. you should just chill I'm sure they'll spend the majority of the finale explaining how Doggan, Illana, Jacob, Whidmore, Faraday's Mom all seem to know everything.... and then that will explain how Adam & Eve was such an epic reveal.

She says, "What a shitty.... guest.... appearance..... arrgghhh"

After rewatching I thought the first thing she said was "thanks", but it's hard to hear. She later says "thank you" right before she dies.

My two cents...
Last night I was disappointed in this episode. Today I feel better and I'm just underwhelmed because of high expectations.
I can accept we won't get all of the answers to the island. There's probably no answer that will satisfy us. Last night only explained Jacob and MIB - to whatever degree you are satisfied.
I thought this episode would explain a lot more. When Jacob's mother is killed, all Jacob knows is that he's the protector of the island. He's pretty much in the dark about a lot of things. Over the next hundreds/thousands of years we get to 2004. He's visiting people off the island. There's a special lighthouse. Candidates. I'm really interested in how he got to that point. The preview and some comments from the interview with the writers tell me more info is coming - hopefully it covers this for me. If it doesn't, I'll accept it and form my own half-baked theories.
I read most of this thread on a blackberry in a meeting today (and it was the most productive thing that came out of the meeting). Someone posted a synopsis from a poster on another site about their thoughts. that person's explanation works really well for me. Dealing with Smoke Monster not really MIB and some other themes. I can live with using that as the backstory to fill in the gaps.
In the end, I still love LOST. I'm not big on network dramas, but if you strip away the mysticism, that's what this show is. And strangely, for me, I like it based on that alone. Add in all of the strange stuff and this has become one of my favorite shows ever. I hope they knock the last 3 hours out of the park.

Decataur asked a question, so I answered. I'm chill, no worries.

Surprised this thread didn't make it to 1000 posts today.

I really thought this episode would explain the statue. It explained the well but does this mean the statue pre-dates the well since Romans dug it? And also the game that mother left for Jacob and MIB seemed to have Egyptian type writings along the edges. After the babies were born and realized they explained Jacob/MIB I really hoped they would go into the mother's story and the origins of the island a bit more.

Froze I was using a little sarcasm.
I think you've added some good insight to this thread.

The game that MIB found as a kid was Senet, which first appeared in Egypt around 3100 B.C.
I'm assuming the mother was from Egypt around this time.
