Technically Penny, not Desmond, is the Constant.

Desmond is Daniel Faraday's constant, but that doesn't help answer the question either.

Technically, Desmond was Faraday's constant.

True, but I'm pretty sure the title of that episode was mostly referring to Penny.

she's his constant
He's Faraday's - but I believe his time on the island makes him special as he experiences time jumps quite differently than the others

Ok so why does FLocke have to get the 6 remaining candidates off the island alive with him? Could he not just kill them? Or is that just one of the guidelines of the game? With Jacob out of the picture I know the candidates pose a threat to MIB, but I'm curious as to why he couldn't just kill them as opposed to having to bring them along with him.

we know he cant kill them, baby Jake said as much
it may be that he cant get off the island unless all candidates + Jacob are dead &/or all physically off the island
since he cant kill them, his next best option is to get them all off in one swoop

This will not happen.

I'm guessing right now the remaining 5 have basically replaced Jacob for the time being as sort of a failsafe. If while Jacob was alive he could convince Jacob to leave the Island with him he could. This is exactly what he is trying to do with the Candidates, and like Jacob he can't directly kill them either.

I don't think its this simple since Jacob left the Island often. I think he has to leave with consent.

Makes sense, considering they are acting as Jacob's "stand-ins", like you mentioned.

I thought about this as well......perhaps there were other candidates on the island when Jacob was off-island?
perhaps, Jacob had the capacity to lock MIB up in the cabin for periods of time while he left?
purely speculation

Why is it when the MIB is stabbed in the chest by Sayid, nothing happens, but when Jacob is stabbed in the chest by Ben, he dies?
