According to Rivals they do not meet the profile of past champions.
Rivals

And for those to lazy to click the link:
1. Be in a "Big Six" conference:
2. Post at least nine victories the previous season: Nine of the 12 BCS champions (75 percent)
3. Posted a winning record in post-October regular-season games: Playing well in November often is the key to winning championships
4. Return a junior or senior quarterback with starting experience: Again, McElroy and Martin are the only quarterbacks without any previous starting experience to lead BCS championship teams.
5. Return at least six starters from a defensive unit that ranked in the top 20 in scoring defense: We'll define returning starters as players who had no fewer than five starts, which represents at least a third of the games. Nine of the past 10 BCS champs ranked at least 20th in scoring defense the previous season.

Still fitting the profile: Three teams -- Nebraska, Ohio State, Virginia Tech.

This past season, Alabama, which went on to win the national championship, fit five of the six characteristics. They did not have a quarterback who previously had started.

I hate to say it, but it is looking like LSU will rise to mediocrity as long as Miles is the coach. It is not his fault, he is just not that bright and he is not a big time college coach. We will eventually end up like the the Charlie Mac teams of old or like Wisconsin of today. A nice team that gets a big win every once in awhile, makes some noise for part of the season, but eventually ends up with 3-4 losses every year and ranked 15th at the end of the season.

He averages right near 10 wins a season, right? Expect 1-3 losses a season. 1-2 more often than 3

If I was a betting man I'd be willing to bet that neither of those 3 win the MNC...

Actually, if you look at our record and who we beat, we are slowly moving down the hill as we get further away from Saban's recruits and players that Saban coached. I can't stand Saban, but the guy can coach and IS a big time coach. Miles is a middle of the road guy and always will be. Last year it took a miracle to beat Mississippi State and Georgia, games we should have lost. Forget the average of 10 wins a season, unless we can play 14-15 games, we may never see another 10 win season with Miles as coach.

Well, heck, I'd be willing to bet, every year, none of the preseason top 3 teams would win the NC. I'd take the field over the top 3 (if it was equal odds). And in this case, I'd definitely take the field over the (probable) preseason #2, #6, and #9 teams.

If miles is a big time coach? What do you call Saban, and Meyer.

Today I would put Derek Dooley in front of Les Miles.

With the guys that Miles went and recruited, HIS guys, he's 8-8 in the SEC. That's not unsettling to the Positigers?

We only won 8 in 2002 so we were one of the exceptions.

As LSU fans this is our traditional norm. I'm very happy with this. It could be a lot worse. Maybe a run at the NC every ten years or so.
