as a defense, held an opponent to less than 230 yards... not western illinois, not La tech, not ULM, not arizona!! we held a descent vandy team to 210 total on saturday!!
last weekend we gave up 478 to washington, on the road, in the season opener!! in 03' we gave up 493 to La tech in the 9th game of the season, at home!!
now, i know our 03' D was awesome... we held all but 4 teams to single digits.. but if you go
found this on another site thought it was interesting

look at the stats we gave up alot of yards... specifically pass yards!!!
the two things that were different was the def rushing and 3rd down conversions... i think we took a step in the right direction this week in fixing our 3rd down conversion rate...
i think with our young DL getting work we will see a difference in def rushing

Well if you don't count the OU game...

I legit didn't know that, wow time made me think so much more highly of that D.

2 things seperate the 03 D from the 09 D
Tackling and DT play. We do not control the LOS and our tackling is horrid. Id like to see the stat for yard after contact against our D.

Don't confuse anyone with facts or by putting things into perspective.

We gave up yards but we didn't let people score.

did we play any games in the rain?

everyone wants us to be like the new york giants in their season opener. Not preseason either.

Wet conditions helped and vandy couldn't catch a ball to save their fricking lives.

For me the gashing of the interior D-line and the poor tackling (although better against Vandy), has me worried. I'm not so concerned with stats and comparisons to '03. Just observing this team right now and what they look like, I see some glaring weaknesses.

But that was $aban winning with DiNardo's...oh, never mind. I believe stats are for losers, anyway.

This is nowhere close to the 2003 D, but it's certainly not last year's D. We're an average defense right now with the potential to be very good if we can correct the tackling issues.
We're also going to need to get more creative with our blitzes since we don't seem to get much pressure with our front 4.

I see this defense getting much better......the progression of players like Nevis and Downs will be key.
Our secondary is going to gel VERY nicely, esp. as they get familiar with Chavis' scheme.

stats are stats....
scores are scores...
2003 Blowouts..
55-24 over Arkansas
27-3 over Alabama
49-10 over La Tech
41-6 over Miss St.
35-7 over Western Illinois
59-13 over Arizona
49-7 over UL-Monroe
I think some got sucked into the Chavis change and started thinking we would dominate teams. Ain't gonna happen this year. The players have to learn his system, he has to find leaders, it takes time..
We are rebuilding and mostly inexperienced, and yet after two games our defense has given up 30 points, with 7 coming at Washington with less than 2 minutes and the game in hand.
Giving up 15 points a game ain't bad.
Everyone better get used to teams moving the football on us. We just have to hope we bend but don't break.
