Most schools shut down their entire football programs due to unavailability of young men during the war. Even Alabama. But not Notre Dame. Rich east coast Catholics got exemptions. And they broadcast ND games over national radio as they won "National Championships" against the few other skeleton teams. And this is where the Notre Dame mystique comes from.

It completely shattered us. We were actually a strong program back in those days. We had just won an SEC title in 1941 and played a bowl game in San Francisco a week before Pearl Harbor.
We had a great coach, good historical success up to that point and post WW2 we never recovered.
I blame hitler and those fanatical Japanese for our floundering football program for the last 80 years.
