Why should private school families have to pay for schools they aren't using on top of paying for their private schooling? Calling this "new spending" is very disingenuous IMO.
Duh, because the state wasn’t funding this before. It is an entirely new program; thus entirely new spending.

Arguing whether or not it's a good or fair policy has nothing to do with if it's creating new spending.
Liberals argue fairness and how good a policy is when they want to spend more, too. It's no even a partisan scenario.

What money to do you pay to the state specifically for public schools?
Are you talking about Texas where you are? Or in Louisiana?

By the way, I didn't use the services of a number of state agencies last year. Do I get my tax money back for that?
If your community funded a private fire department because the city services kept letting everyone die in fires, of course.

I think this is a great idea.
If I don’t like the public school option, I can opt out and send my kids to private school.
But I believe they aren’t going far enough. What if I don’t like the neighborhood BREC tennis courts open to me and my family? Couldn’t the state throw in a couple of grand a year so I could join the raquet club?
And Webb and City Park are too crowded. My time is valuable. How about the state giving me about 5K a year to join CCL?
If you aren’t happy with the services that are open to the public shouldn’t we all get better access to private facilities?

It’s the nature of socialism
What was once considered conservative becomes warped.
Like healthcare. In England, no one would consider a private healthcare system. Here, it’s considered a liberal dream to eliminate private health care.

While I like the concept of school choice, I don’t think the charter school program has been successful thus far. I fear this will be an even bigger boondoggle, but I will need to see more about this plan.

Conservatives always winning

This a disingenuous and intellectually dishonest slant on what the bill does.
What the bill actually does is ties a portion of education dollars to children and not to school systems.

Doesn't Riser also have the bill to kill the income tax? At least we have one good conservative left, I guess.
people hoping this happen are in for a big surprise.
Get ready for a repeal of the homestead exemption and major hikes on property taxes, just like every other state that doesn't have an income tax and/or sales tax.

I’m going to take a page out of the Dems playbook and simply state.. I don’t care since I’m going to benefit.

ALL money spent by the government is generated by the citizens. Income taxes, sales taxes, corporate taxes, fees, etc. all come out of the citizens pocket at some point.

The goal is to effectively eliminate public schools, and more importantly, diminish the impact of teacher's unions.
Then file a bill doing so.
But you and I both know that is NOT the goal here.

The bill creates $520M in new entitlement spending.
I don't give a rat's rear about whether you or anyone else think it's a "good" idea.
Just admit it... you like daddy government paying for your private things.

Bring it on.
At least property taxes are charged on a local level, and I can get my school board member or my parish council member to answer the phone and talk to me.
If my net tax bill doesn't go down one penny, yet more power and decisions are made at the local level, this is a huge win.

I hear you.
But stop calling yourself a conservative. You are a big government liberal.
Own it, brother.

Charter programs in Orleans Parish have brought the condition of public schools in that parish from completely horrific, to on average, simply bad. There are a few charter schools doing very well by any standard, but they are all magnet "test to get in" type schools.
One thing I do like about charters is that if they suck, they get closed. Even if voucher schools suck, they keep getting voucher money, I beleive.

The difference between the GOP and Democrats is simple.
They both want big daddy government paying for things and forcing people to do (or not do) things.
The difference is in what those "things" are.
