I live them and think they are some of the most beautiful trees out there. Many hate the leaves they shed but that doesn’t bother me because I have a lawnmower. The Little Gem magnolias are great.

Cons - leaves, cones, red seeds, wasps, low clearance

Pros - not as ugly as some other trees

I love Magnolias. I was going to plant a Magnolia Stelatta "Jane Platt" one this year. I love the pink and white blooms.

Cons: leaves, cones, bare ground underneath, shallow/above-ground roots.

Pros: beautiful tree, blooms, southern icon

I had one that was near my driveway and I got tired of it dropping leaves that blew into the garage. I left the one in my yard.

They can be grown with branches down to the ground and they look like huge topiaries. I wish I knew about this earlier.

I grew up in the Lower 9th Ward in an old shotgun house and the neighbor right next door had 2 HUGE magnolia trees right on his side of the fence of the property line.

I hated those trees with a passion as a kid since I was the one who had to rake up all the damn leaves, pick up all the damn cones they eventually dropped and washed lots of bird crap off cars once they ate the red seeds the cones made. My dad died when I was 8 and I took over a lot of his chores.

They drop leaves year round and it's not like you can pile them up and they will compost since they are thick and waxy leaves. They take forever even after mulching with a mower.

I remember begging my mom to have someone cut the limbs on our side of the fence, but she wouldn't------until I moved out at 17 and it fell on her and my 2 sisters to deal with it. THEN they got cut----damn trees looked like a couple of "P's" when they were done.

Cons- they're messy as hell

The old lady in the neighborhood said they belong in the woods. I agree

Regular magnolias are very messy.

Little Gems do not drop as many leaves and they do not get as large as the regular magnolias.

They are pretty. But the leaves are terrible. They fall year round.
