Houma

Several years ago it won the state's cleanest city contest in its category. One of the resident cynics said at a council meeting, "did they bring the judges in with blindfolds on?"

He was referring to the scrap yards that line old US 90 before they put a metal fence.

Dirtiest city for me is mobile, AL - white trash meth heads everywhere. It’s a shithole

That's very sad to hear.
I lived in Mobile 1998-2001 and I thought it was great. Actually regretted leaving....

Everyone says Gary, Indiana - and I'm not arguing or disputing with you, as I haven't been (I previously selected Terre Haute as one of my choices).

But what is it about that rust belt area - Gary, IN or perhaps South Bend, IN, Toledo, OH, maybe Fort Wayne, IN that is supposedly so dirty, neglected and run down?

Louisville was pretty destitute. Around 2015 anyway. They've done a little to clean it up.

Baltimore. I've been to a lot of the cities mentioned and some of them have a trashy downtown core but much of the rest is fairly decent (Portland for example). Baltimore has a trashy downtown core as well, but it might be the nicest part of the city. The entire city is trashed.

Abq sounds like the area around the bus station neighborhood in El Paso. The few times I been there it really felt like I may be killed at any minute and I have never felt like that anywhere outside of combat deployments.

ABQ is also pretty damned dangerous LOL. El Paso, while lacking beauty for the most part, is one of the safest cities in the United States for its size. I am sure there are areas of El Paso where one could get in trouble were one so inclined but statistically it is very safe. ABQ, on the other hand, not so much....as is the case for most of New Mexico. Lots of meth in New Mexico. Lots. Breaking bad aside there is a lot of meth in New Mexico.

I haven't been to that part of El Paso, but the other areas I thought were fairly clean. Surprisingly so for a border town.

Sorry to hear that about El Paso. It's one of the American cities that I'm secretly rooting for (along with Detroit, Memphis, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Beaumont, and Jackson).

El Paso is flourishing. Very safe, stable economy that also benefits from the oil field but is not dependent on it. Its a long fricking ways from anything else though, except of course Juarez which is also pretty nice if you ain't trying to go into the drug trade.

I know you they are raining downvotes on you for this but I am in Houston one week a month and it has progressively gotten dirtier. Hopefully the new Mayor (R) will solve that.

Gary is a mill town and the mill, while not closed, does not employ nearly as many people as it once did. It is also one of the filthiest run down steel mills in the world still in operation and one of the biggest (mat actually be the biggest). Gary was once a thriving city which is obvious by the number or ornate architectural treasures boarded up and falling in on themselves. When the mill was integrated the white mill hands fled to Portage and Hobart and while the mill was desegregated on paper it was not in reality and the surrounding area was left a ghost town. Its really really bad. I grew up on the west side of Atlanta in the 1970s and 1980s....I ain't ever been shocked by violent crime and run down areas of towns...Gary managed to do it. I worked at that mill for about 9 weeks one winter...the stories will curl your toes.

Well...go on...

What about other parts of Northern Indiana? Do you know much about them?

The NW part of the state is very depressing but has had slow steady growth for some years now just due to proximity to Chicago.

The reason it sucks in Gary (and surrounding areas) is you have no economic oppourtunities. WW2 => post-WW2 economy had a lot of manufacturing in Gary. That all left and the place essentially has had a few decades worth of decline. As more people left and the tax base shrunk + debt, the area just crumbled. The decline just continues as well. From 1990 to now the population has shrunk in half. No jobs, bored residents, the city is fairly empty. There is just nothing there. Also, so many abandonded building and homes -- streets full of them.

There are still decent/nice areas there, Miller Beach being a nice spot. The city has also torn down a good number of abandoned buildings. It's gotten slightly better. It's also no where near as dangerous as it was like 10-20 years ago. You're fine on the main streets, not fine in the sketchy parts at night. Just like anywhere else.

For the rest of Northern Indiana. You have some cool spots by the Lake, the Indiana Dunes National Park is okay, NE Indiana is just rural and nice but boring. You have the Lake Effect there so you get dumped on in the winter.

Northern Indianapolis has exploded and has some very nice communities just north of the 465 loop (anywhere north of it is nice).

Overall Indiana is pretty depressing to me. It's a very boring place to live. Writing this post mentally took me back to living there and I feel like I need a drink.

Where did you live?

My Indiana experience is limited to Terre Haute (hated) and an occasional overnight trip to Bloomington (really liked). Work sent me to Terre Haute fairly regularly...4 or 5 times a year. Just a weird, strange place. ISU is there, but I gathered that is largely a commuter school and/or students would leave on the weekends. The people and students are also very "country" or "rural" feeling.

However, the city had this constant weird aura to it with the correctional facilities located there. Just this constant depressing, gloomy feeling. People were always looking at you, wondering who you were...everything seemed on edge.

Bloomington, on the other hand, was great. Really nice college town and campus. The campus was great, downtown was nice...people were very positive, energetic, and appeared to be happy. Just a complete change in pace.

Too many here haven't visited the beach towns in Jersey. And no, not Atlantic city or seaside heights. Great beaches, homes, and overall towns. Rest of Jersey between philly and NYC = trash though. Except Princeton.

You're not wrong. I went to an ISU homecoming football game. My coworkers were hyping it up to be this awesome and extremely fun weekend in a cool college town. Terre Haute sucked. Just a depressing, grey, and boring town. I went back a few times to see a girl that lived there until I just couldnt do it anymore. It wasn't her, it was the town.

Bloomington is a nice town. My aunt went to IU so I have fond memories of being there.

I lived in various parts of Indianapolis. Downtown, Speedway, Broad Ripple, Carmel up to the North. Carmel is arguably the nicest place I have ever lived. I really love that town, and the surrounding areas are extremely nice.

I'm just not aligned with Indiana though. It was not a great time for me, but I know tons of people who love it there. Low COL, great place to raise a family, some fairly good jobs in Indianapolis, solid state govt.

I’m from St Louis. North is worse than East both are horrible and probably on par with Baltimore. The STL suburbs function as their own city tho and are both affordable and safe.

I would never move back. I’m safer in Houston. Than metro areas of St Louis. And it’s not even close.
