How the frick is Godzilla Minus One not a nominee in the international feature category?
It's a great movie that just so happens to be a Godzilla movie.
It deserves to be in more than a lot of these films.

Okay then.
Was it submitted for best picture? Should be on the list if it was.

I enjoyed Anatomy so I can only imagine that had hoped to shine the light on two French films or they were offended that half of Anatomy was in English.
The French Government threw a tantrum because the director of the film criticized the president.

That was going to be my third guess

Apparently the French selection was something other than Anatomy of a Fall (which was nominated for Best Picture). So those can’t be included as snubs since the voters didn’t even have the choice to pick those films for the respective categories.
I've been a huge Oscar follower and was super plugged-in for most of my life--it's only been in my 40s that I haven't really watched. Probably a combo of just life priorities and the over politicalization of Awards Seasons the past 5+ years. But that's not the point I'm trying make.
In the 30+ years I have been following the Oscars, I somehow never learned that a country could only submit 1 film for Best Foreign Language Feature until about 15 minutes ago. Has it always been this way? I mean, I get that the voters have to watch a ton of American films already and not capping it would make it impossible to watch all the submissions.
But still, some countries make way better films than others, and limiting them to just 1 seems kinda bullshite. And invites more politics into an already over political process. And it prevents people from being introduced to worthy foreign films that had they not been nominated, they otherwise wouldn't know existed. Oh well.

I mean… it’s an American awards show.
Win all your Japanese awards.

Oh, I agree. I'm not feeling sorry for anybody or anything. Just kind of a bummer for those of us who like film enough to try to watch all the nominees, but aren't as hard core as some who go out seeking much more than that. Oh well, that's part of what this board is for, I suppose.

Because Japan didn’t choose to nominate it.
Foreign countries choose which movies they want to be eligible for best international film and it’s almost always they choose some pretentious movie over more popular fare

it's not that american anymore .... of the 10 best picture nominations, 5 were shot mostly outside of the country. And three of those had LSU Alum in prominent art department positions BTW.
The Academy has several thousand international members. Votes came in from 93 countries.

I do think this is somewhat well known. This topic comes up every year

They're serious with this Barbie nonsense?
Posted on 1/24/24 at 8:50 am to hogcard1964
not really ... the international block helped push The Zone of Interest ahead of it (rightfully so IMO)
Along with Anatomy of a Fall
All this talk about Greta and Margot is silly .. while surprising, the directors vote for directors and actors for actors in the nomination period. So, it wasn't an Academy snub. A colleague comment if anything ..

i don't think Barbie gets best production design .... based on toys and was designed by a Brit and filmed in London.
Jack Fisk ... a legend in the design world and previous winner takes it for KOTFM
And Da'vine JR from the Holdovers is taking the best supporting actress easily
Poor things for Costumes ... Napoleon is same old same old and recieved tepid reviews. Poor things was actual design, not recreated, albeit accurate period garb.

Robbie should have got the nom over the chick from Nyad, which was objectively terrible. But Greta didn't stand a chance with best director. The more surprising thing is that Ferrera/Gosling got noms, Ferrera especially was just bad and almost torpedoed the movie.
Maestro was soooo bad, I can only imagine what Netflix had to spend to get it nominated so much
ETA I agree with others that Godzilla should have got more recognition, the score especially was great

I’ve heard very good things about American Fiction.

Very hard not to mansplain when people say "so only the guy in Barbie gets nominated" when America Ferrera and Billie Eilish are also nominated.

What a weak year for movies. These noms are so mediocre. Emily Blunt is cool, but all the rest are dumb.

That's awesome. Are you in that number? The way I've seen you talk about The Holdovers, it seemed like you were really proud of that film. Or maybe just a big fan of Alexander Payne's work. If the former, congratulations. (Or I'm sorry since it doesn't appear the art department was recognized for it ). Either way, hope all is well.
