LSU doesn’t write a check tomorrow for 5.5 mil… at least in House’s case (which is the bulk of the buyout), I believe it’s paid out over 2-3 years

I know. But when you are firing coaches left and right it adds up. For example TAF is still paying Ed Orgeron monthly installments through December of 2025.

While I think it would be a stupid move, I also get it from a personal standpoint. Hope he stays

Also didn’t BK…. Cut Blake?

Didn't Ole Miss put like 500 yards on LSU in 19? Sometimes really good defenses will still have off days against modern offenses.

People complained about that defense all season long. Vandy put up 38. Ol miss 37. Bama put up 41. Texas 38. Florida 28. Arkansas 20.

People say Jayden would have went undefeated with Burrow’s defense but that defense wasn’t as great as some seem to remember. They did have some good games but more bad ones than good.

You also have to look at the score. If LSU is up by 4 or 5 TDs, which they were many times in 2019, the defense is going to be playing soft. Bama, for instance, one score happened when freshman Stingley looked towards the sideline and Bama hiked the ball. Then Aranda played press coverage on Bama's last TD and got beat over the top. He should have been in Prevent. The score doesn't always tell the whole story.

This defense just needed to make a few stops. They make a stop at Ole Miss, we win the game and only have 2 losses on the season. If they could have made a few stops at Bama, it would have changed the game.

Does anyone have any reservations about Baker? His mentor gave him a dc job and then took away his defensive play calling after 2 years. He then came to LSU and Kelly chose not to retain/offer him. Now after 2 seasons at Missouri (where he inherited Multiple year NFL DC system) he's 'found the magic '?

Mentor being Manny Diaz and the system he took over in Missouri is Steve Wilks... I mean there is room to ponder that this guy is not ready for this job.

There were some that thought he should have been promoted from LB coach to DC.

There were plenty who would have loved it if he were retained as a position coach, but no one was clamoring for him to be our DC at the time. Mizzou didn’t even hire him to be theirs. He was hired to be their Safeties coach until their DC left.

You also have to look at the score.

Texas was a 1 TD game: 45-38
Auburn was a field goal: 23-20
Bama was 5 points: 46-41
Florida was tied 28-28 towards the end of the 3rd so that wasn’t a lead cushion.

Do y’all really not remember? this board was full of people complaining and predicting the defense would cost a game…

ETA: I’m not claiming 2019 defense was as bad as 2023. But they were not a “really good” defense.

Do we really want this guy that bad? Could Baker be the smoke screen?

Feels like we have better options elsewhere…

It seems like bringing Baker and Raymond back in after he showed both the door just 2 years ago would be a huge hit to Kelly's reputation and an admittance of colossal failure on his part. Will he really do that?

Yeah he will because he isn’t a ranter. He is a consummate leader who can take on criticism and admit mistakes.

Nah... team needed a hard reset and got one. We're on the uptick and Baker has proven himself at the DC spot.

CBK could easily bring him back.

He purged everyone but the OL coach. Even the S&C lifetimer was shown the door (now at A&M). Additionally, he brought in Matt House, who focused on linebackers as the DC, which was where Blake Baker was working. It was redundant.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it wasn't like he fired him on lack or merit or not liking the guy. He was just 1 of 12 coaches not retained in a purge (or something like that).

Yeah, that LSU defense really wasn't "good" until the final regular season game vs. A&M.

They literally could not stop Texas from scoring in the 2nd half of that game. That's one reason why 3rd & 17 was so huge. It was a 6 point game at that point with the VERY likely reality that if LSU gave Texas the ball back they would score to take the lead. In fact, Texas did score again and had a chance to recover an onside kick.

The Florida game was back and forth throughout with Kyle Trask, making his 1st or 2nd start ever, throwing for 300+ and 3 TDs. Florida converted 3rd down after 3rd down in the 2nd half and looked like they were going to tie the game up again late but for a terrible pass into the endzone that Stingley had no choice but to catch.

LSU could not stop Alabama in the second half. Turning a 33-13 halftime lead into a barnburner. Hell, even when it looked like LSU had finally put Alabama away with less than 2:00 to go, Alabama scored on 1 play...85 yards, make it a 5 point game and give Alabama a chance to recover an onsides kick. In fact, it was the 3rd time that season (Texas, Auburn, Alabama) and opponent had an onsides kick at the end of the game LSU had to survive.

Fortunately the defense clicked in the postseason which allowed LSU to dominate the final 4 games. But it was NOT a good defense for most of the year.
