Texas was 45-31 before a late meaningless score. They also played the second half of that game with 4 starters on defense knocked out of the game. Auburn was 23-13 before a late meaningless TD and Auburn had only 287 total yards. I’m not sure how you interpret that as a bad defensive performance. Alabama was 46-34 before a late meaningless TD, but it’s hard to argue the defense played well in either the Alabama or Ole Miss games with Delpit hobbled and a severe liability.
The defense played very well from that point forward. Arkansas scored 2 late TDs against backups when it was 56-6. A&M scored 7. Georgia scored 10. Oklahoma scored 28, but 14 came after it was 56-14. Plus Oklahoma had not been held below 28 since September 2016. Clemson’s 25 was well below their average and their second lowest output of the year. They put up more yards and points in the CFP semifinal against Ohio St who had the 2nd ranked defense in the nation. That was a very good defense down the stretch.
