Missouri’s Blake Baker has emerged as a leading target for the LSU defensive coordinator job, sources tell @mzenitz and me for @247Sports.

EDIT: I posted what appears to be an old incomplete termsheet showing buyout, etc. couple comments below this.

UPDATE: Mizzou trying to keep Baker
quote:

But there's no guarantee that Baker is automatically going to depart Eli Drinkwitz's rising Missouri program to join Kelly at LSU. Missouri very much is working to retain Baker. Already last month, Baker and offensive coordinator Kirby Moore were rewarded with contract extensions and raises from Missouri leadership. Baker crested the seven-figure mark in his deal at Missouri, with a pact per public records that was set to pay Baker $1.1 million and increase by at least $100,000 per year through 2025. The buyout on that deal, should Baker decide to leave, was not immediately available.

Do we know for sure what his buyout is at Missouri?

No but I found this for his old contract
Missouri site term sheet Blake Baker

Something significant: it seems if he terminates with Mizzou between Dec 21 2023- Dec 21 2024 he owes $800K. Im assuming new contract has something similar

Didn't Ole Miss put like 500 yards on LSU in 19? Sometimes really good defenses will still have off days against modern offenses.

Would have been nice if we retained him in the 1st place. There were some that thought he should have been promoted from LB coach to DC.

That doesn't mean he's not a good DC. Aranda got torched as well.

A brand new HC can’t promote the existing LB coach to DC

If anything, he could have maybe been retained at LB coach, but even that’s a stretch for a program that clearly needed a “reset”

There’s no way any new head coach elevates the existing/inherited LB coach to DC in that situation at a major program.

Why didn't we just keep him when Kelly took over?

We had the #1 total offense in FBS. #1!

Missouri held UGA to 110 yards below their average, btw. 385 vs 495.

It was 31-7 @ halftime. Defense did their job and relaxed in the 2nd half. Game was never in question.

We had a historically great offense doesn’t mean he isn’t a good DC

Is this an actual rule or did you just make this up?

Not saying you're wrong. It just sounds odd.

No not a rule…. Just not a good look at a major program. Head coach would be criticized from the jump.

Public perception would not be good.

The whole point of a HC change is to change things. And the coordinators are the biggest pieces behind the HC.

There was NO CHANCE that an assistant for the prior regime was getting elevated to coordinator status given the circumstances. Nothing to do with rules, just being practical given the circumstances.

Baker may very well be upset for not being retained as LB coach, but he’s certainly smart enough to know there was no way possible he was gonna be LSU’s next DC under the circumstances. He’s probably not even upset he wasn’t retained as LB coach… it was a coaching change, I’m sure he understands.

We couldnt even stop a QB run that game. Every good defense has their bad days. We just had to be average this season and we were potential playoff team. Blake Baker will transform this defense EASILY. Superb recruiter, knows Louisiana, and has skins on the wall.
