Is it still good? Ground meat edition

Last night I took out a 10lb tube of ground meat to defrost. I left it outside on a table all night since temps were in the 40s. I completely forgot about it this morning. I came home on my lunch break and it was completely thawed and the temperature outside was 50 at the time. Is it a total loss? It was frozen solid when I put it out last night around 9.

I'm pretty cavalier when it comes to food left out, and I say trash that.

I wouldn't even expect it to be thawed yet, unless it's getting sun.

The USDA says, "Refrigerate or freeze ground beef as soon as possible after purchase. This preserves freshness and slows the growth of bacteria. It can be refrigerated or frozen in its original packaging if the meat will be used soon.
If refrigerated, keep at 40°F (4.4°C) or below and use within 1 or 2 days."

I'm eating that unless it doesn't pass the smell test. Ground meat stays in less ideal conditions at supermarkets all the time.

I didn’t have time to open it to smell, I’ll do it this evening. My plan was to mix it up with some ground deer meat but I dont want to contaminate even more meat. I didn’t think it would be completely defrosted that fast that’s why I’m concerned.

It’s the part that did thaw and rose to grow bad stuff temp I would worry about.

Ground meat is not to be trifled with. It's different than a steak since the inside has been potentially "contaminated" when it was ground.

I bet there's nothing wrong with it. Like the other guy said, smell it.
When I was young and poor, we cooked burgers with meat that was green and smelled like arse. And nothing happened.

Cook it, then give your wife some first. If she crooks, don't eat it.

Smell it.
This. Open it look at the color and smell it. Your nose will tell you right away if it is bad.

Ask the A&M board. They are most experienced with tubes of meat

We can’t tell you if it’s good or not. We do not know the temps and times. Is it good? Probably. Can it be bad? Absolutely.
If you’re not sure, then you should throw it out. When in doubt, throw it out.
Fun fact: A&M actually has one of the top meat science departments in the country. The joke was funny though.

If it smells alright, cook it up. That scenario isn't that bad to be honest.

That outside temperature isn't too much higher than your refrigerator.

quote:Mom eats frozen waffles for breakfast most days. Had a WalMart delivery left overnight on the doorstep due to me being too sick to get out of bed and her being 85 and hard of hearing. Her frozen waffles were fine, she ate the whole box of 24 or something. Her nightly snack yogurt cups were fine too but they are already active culture anyway.
