Steak is what made mine fall off, enjoying a nice sit-down dinner with the family at saltgrass then it popped off and I bit down on it, cracking it in half.

Yes, because nerves are the "root" of all evil.

Depends. First, never let a dentist do the procedure. They simply are not equipped to handle anything that is out of the ordinary. Use an endodontist. Second, if you have weirdness like reversed upper and lower anatomies, well, it will suck no matter who does the procedure. My upper molars' anatomy is reversed along with nerve oddities. No amount of injections could deaden it so guy had to cut the top of my tooth off and shoot the nerve directly. Good luck!

The worst part is the next days soreness from the needles being shoved in your gums. The actual procedure and recovery doesn’t hurt at all.

once they numb you, the pain is done.

The procedure itself did not hurt once I was numb. The shots did suck a bit though. It wasn't just 1 or 2... it was like 8. And somehow I caught sight of the big arse silver syringe and almost passed out.

Agree with this. Dang needle was so long I think the assistant had to hold up the other end of it in the next room. I had expressed my concerns to the dentist prior to the procedure based on what I've seen in other people..swollen up and miserable. He told me the reason for most of that is when a dentist performs the surgery and the patient has an infection. I was on antibiotics for a few days prior. No problems pain at all, except for fricking needlesticks.

Root canals aren't bad at all. On the other hand, grinding down the tooth to fit the permanent crown sometime later is easily the least pleasant dental experience I've ever had.

My dentist has done 5 of mine. He’s great. I went to a rehearsal dinner the night of after he treated a molar.

You don't feel a thing. The smell and taste of the burning tooth from the drilling is the worst part.

Dreading it is the worst part.

I understand that, but when mine did it was just mildly uncomfortable with temp changes or such but that waned after a couple hours.

Don't be afraid to let the dentist know if you are feeling something. Anesthetics are never as effective as they should be when I've had procedures. Been that way my entire life. My dentist knows this. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled (Never too late at 44), he encouraged me to let him know if I felt anything other than pressure.

By the way, horrifying experience. The sounds of crushed teeth and popping roots was very distressing.

They aren't too bad. The worst part is 12-15 years from now it's been super dark and you'll be getting a new tooth. That's the real pain in the arse.

OP could just read the thread on this from a few days ago, but biggest things to know:

1) Have the procedure done by an endodontist, they're trained specifically for root canals

2) You actually have to have the exact same procedure done TWO times, usually a week or two apart

3) The worst part is the numbing process; if you're particularly sensitive to that they can/should numb you a little bit at a time

4) The procedure itself is not bad...just vibration and pressure and having your mouth open for a while. Pro tip is to just close your eyes from the moment they're going to numb you through when the procedure is done, so you don't see anything

I hate dental work. I've had 3 root canals and they weren't that bad. The shot is the worst part IMO. Not getting it done when needed and having mind numbing pain because you neglected it is far worse.

My wife had her first root canal last month. Said the shot to numb it hurt a little bit, but there was no pain at all after that.

I’m going to the same one my dentist uses. He said that there should be no pain whatsoever during the procedure and that I’ll fall asleep while it’s being done.

Eh, while technically true, but some folks are more difficult to get numb than others, so YMMV. It sounds like a fracture resulting in pupal exposure and not carious exposure, so those tend to get numb easier than infected teeth. I did fall asleep while getting my last RCT, so they do usually go pretty easy

don’t want a hole there and sure as hell don’t want an implant.

You are correct that missing a tooth will negatively affect your chewing ability and smile, implants, when done correctly, have a very high success rate similar to that of a root canal. Implants aren't for every tooth issue, but don't write them off completely
