Anyone ever traveled to this area this time of year. I understand there may be some snow weather possibly?

Would be driving from Denver into Utah (Moab) then work way down to Grand Canyon etc…

Any help or suggestions appreciated!

Can’t speak to Utah, but April is still ski season in Colorado, and definitely can have big snow fall in the mountains that shut down the passes along I-70 and other mountain highways in April. But that is rare and usually will be cleared fairly quickly.

High elevations in colorado will most likely be covered in snow and not really accessible for hiking/camping that time of year. But It’s a great time though as it’s usually sunny and warm enough outside to recreate outside of an acute storm event.

Thanks for the insight!

We would use Denver as a starting point. Drive west along I70 to Moab then work our way down etc..

May or may not use the first day to fly in, travel up to Estes Park and then back down to Denver for the night then spend the next day/morning driving to Moab… still in discussion.

Why? Estes will most likely be under several feet of snow.

If you aren’t skiing I’d look into flying into Vegas or Salt Lake. The drive over Vail and Loveland Passes can be absolutely miserable if a storm comes. No reason to fight that if you aren’t skiing.

No reason to fly into Denver if you’re going to Moab. Fly into SLC or Vegas.

It’s closer to fly into SLC. We just did this trip in reverse 2 weeks ago. Flew into SLC, drove to Moab, then drove up to Denver (for an appointment). A friend of mine went to Moab in April. The weather was great for hiking but too cold for glamping!

I live in the mountains of central Colorado.

Yeah, you can get big snowfalls in April. I fully intend to be skiing alot that month as traffic to the mountains dies off.

On I70, there are three big choke points in the mountains that get closures.

The Tunnels between Silver Plume/Georgetown and Silverthorne.

Vail Pass between Copper Mountain and East Vail.

Glenwood Canyon between Dotsero and Glenwood Springs.

And in April, we can get big storms on the front range too.

Nah, November holds that spot. There is too much snow to do anything but not enough to do the stuff you want plus it is starting to stay cold.

April has big storms and spring skiing. The Arkansas River Valley and Junction are starting to thaw out. We usually start seeing 70s in Denver again, so folks start planning their river and camping trips in earnest. April is pretty damn awesome here.

Thanks for all of the insight.

We've been monitoring flights into Denver/SLC when looking at travel out that way. Understand the gamble in starting to fly into Denver first....

What if we had a backup plan of not doing Moab and going south from Denver towards the 4 Corners through Durango then doing southern Utah?

How is this drive possibly?

Would like for the kids to see the different terrain and what Colorado has to offer, but also don't want to lose most of the trip due to roads being blocked etc.

You have 10 people in this thread, who live in Colorado full time, telling you not to attempt to drive Colorado in April, unless you’re trying to ski.

Denver —> Durango will take you through Fairplay. This is not a drive you want to do during a snowstorm.

The drives to Moab from Vegas and SLC are very beautiful.

Just double checking...

We are monitoring the flights into those airports that time of year. It's $70 more to go SLC per person, but have been more into the Denver flights due to those prices....will have to lock in more on SLC if we truly are looking at sticking with the West trip.

You don't want to mess with I-70 between Denver and Glenwood Springs if you aren't skiing. Fly into Grand Junction or SLC.

I drive across the Continental Divide twice a day, six days a week, all winter. It has to be about an actual whiteout for me to really be nervous.

I personally wouldnt be keen to just take a random day in April to go DIA to Durango. Maybe the weather is good. Maybe it sucks.

Consider if you have the winter mountain driving experience I have.

SLC and Vegas dude.

Why does no one recommend the regional airport at St. George?

Why not fly right into Moab then? It also has an airport.
