What IS an endowment & what can that money be spent on?

Its money donated to the university. You can donate to a general fund, or donate to a specific department in the university.

LSU's endowment is handled through the LSU Foundation. LINK

Money donated to the university that’s invested. Normally used towards scholarships, attracting quality professors and researchers.

If ftb competing was all about endowment then Vanderbilt would be the bama dynasty of the 2010s so

You can thank Huey Long for that

Apples and oranges, there was no NIL in the 2010s where players were legally paid six and seven figures.

They typically include funds given to an institution by donors, etc. The initial gift/deposit is never touched but maintained and managed in perpetuity to generate earnings and appreciation in value.

That appreciation is what’s used to fund scholarships, professorship, etc.

LSU’s is managed by the LSU Foundation.

I can’t disagree with you but UT & TAMU have received oil royalties from land in West TX that was given to them in the 1800s before oil was even discovered on that land. Over the years UT received about 2/3 of the royalties from that land & TAMU received about 1/3 of the royalties. That’s why they have the largest endowments in the SEC.

The severance tax fund that funds the UT system and A&M system endowments is not because some oil companies are HQ in Texas. It is because petro is extracted in Texas.

Louisiana has severance taxes as well from petro extracted inside our boundaries. But Texas is a huge state geographically and Louisiana is a small state in that sense.
