That is one of the worst articles I have ever read
The biggest knock against Fleck is that if certain guys who were high character failed a drug test, he looked the other way
THE HORRIR
How in the hell is that “toxic culture”?

Do you get credits at the Fleck Bank if you pay in Schrute Bucks?

I mean this happens every 5-10 years where this comes out about a number of programs.
It's happening everywhere and some kids who get upset bring things up.
This is pretty much what happened with Leach (RIP) at Tech. Family was pissed and went after him

Former Players,
Such soft bullshite
quote:
Dan Nichol, Minnesota’s head football strength and conditioning coach who followed Fleck over from Western Michigan and interned at Iowa under disgraced strength coach Chris Doyle, gathered the team together after Fleck was hired, one of the former players said. The instruction was simple: Clap whenever Fleck entered the locker room.
“We had to [practice giving Fleck ovations] multiple times — the first time, because some other people in the back were not moving as quick as he wanted,” a third player told FOS.
Two other former players said that Fleck would reenter a room if he didn’t like the ovation he received.
quote:
said the second player. “He wanted you to be family, and he wanted you to do whatever he wanted you to do.”
quote:
After that first team meeting in 2017, players received a three-ring binder they were required to memorize and on which they were tested. FOS obtained several pages of the binder used by Fleck during his time at Minnesota.
The third player said that one acronym stood out: F.A.M.I.L.Y., short for “Forget About Me, I Love You.”
“He was making us say, forget about yourself as an individual,” the player said. “I was baffled because it’s not anything logical. If you forget about yourself, then who are you?”
Added a fourth player: “It’s based around Fleck’s ego. You have to talk a certain way. You have to be a certain way. … Within that building of the University of Minnesota, it’s very much like brainwashing.”
quote:
There was only one acceptable answer when Fleck and other staff members asked, “How are you doing?”
“I’m elite.”
“It was sickening because I wasn’t OK,” the first player said, “I wasn’t in a good mental spot. I was struggling. I was fighting every day just to get by or find hope. It’s not natural to say when someone asks how you’re doing to say, ‘I am elite.’ When I said, ‘I’m good,’ [Fleck] would respond, ‘Oh, you’re not elite?’ He would either get all frustrated and walk off, or I’d be told, ‘You’re supposed to say elite.’ Inside, I was not feeling anywhere near that.”

That article is pure trash.

I skimmed the article and most of it, other than giving players passes on drug tests, is pretty tame.
The gist of the whole article is he has some cringy slogans, and encouraged people to stay on top of their studying and encouraged community service and gave out tokens or coins (similar to stickers for good behavior/test scores in elementary school).
Is it kinda weird? Yeah he's a weird guy. But to be mentioned in the same breath as what went on at Northwestern is such a reach you'd have to be stretch armstrong

What a total nothing burger.

Reads like a former player with mental illness and a former regent with an ax to grind gave a bunch of chicken shite to Front Office Sports who failed to make chicken salad of it. Miserably.

PJ Fleck being a very weird narcissist doesn't seem like breaking news. The PJ Fleck personality cult is kind of his whole schtick?

read the whole thing....99.9999% of that is complete horse shite. They required community service, you were rewarded for good grades & forced to make good grades and made you drink protein shakes in front of them? ummm...
A) community service is required at lots of places.
B) Minn should be proud they have a coach that requires and forces the kids to make the grades
C) forced to drink protein shake because you are underweight??? maybe, just maybe they care about you getting to the weight you need to be at. The whole comment about being obsessed with weight...to quote dan hawkins..."This is D1 football brother!!" I mean wtf do they expect??
D) forced to do extra workouts for punishment for breaking team rules...wtf? of course. how the hell does one get PTSD over that?
E) coaches encouraging kids to play if they are not seriously injured?? wtf do you think you are playing brother? "ITS D1 football!!"
i mean seriously the article is complete dog shite

The worst thing suggested in that article is that Fleck and his coaches may have rushed some players back from injury, but then they quote a former player saying...
Okay? If a player isn't making progress on recovery, then maybe coaches have a right to question if he is following medical recommendations himself.
So basically, Fleck's methods are a little weird, and not everyone likes it. This board knew that when he was at Western Michigan. What a bullshite story.

One thing all college football programs have in common; disgruntled players that don't think they got a fair shake.

I'm not the biggest Fleck fan but Holy cow this was a bunch of garbage.

Wait the row the boat guy has some shitty slogans? Shocked.

Well it is the Big10.. part of life up in that cesspool of a conference.

This article just confirms what I already thought of Fleck. A strange guy with used car salesman vibes who wouldn’t be my first choice to play for if I was a D1 recruit. But no doubt a solid coach who has done well.
As for the ”allegations”: they’re a lot of nothing. Sports media now acts as if unhappy athletes within a program is some kind of scandal. Breaking news: there are college athletes who don’t fit in at the school they chose. Either adapt or transfer like everyone else has for decades. Unless Fleck starts losing or commits an egregious infraction he will remain the coach.
