My golf buddy took his daughter to the Sabine river to swim last weekend. Most of the river is private so you have to know someone to get near it. On the way out his friend who let him use the property called him over to show him his pet in the back of his truck. It was a huge canebrake, but dead. I have never seen a rattlesnake in the wild. Lots of Mocs, Coppers and a few Corrals.

I raised like 40 species of snakes, not cause I wanted to, but my dad was like a Steve Erwin type, did school exhibits and teaching about differences in snakes, etc. Yes, those are Cottonmouths, and to those that think it’s a Copperhead, there’s a notable difference, even from a decent distance that can easily discern the difference. Now, this Cottonmouth is really beautiful, and light. Probably been in a den, or dark area awaiting an ambush. But, notice the jagged hourglass pattern, like it’s pixelated. Copperheads have a clean pattern with sharp edges, also very pretty snakes. Both of these species will have chartreuse tails when they are juveniles, for caudal luring. Their prey see that, and think it’s a worm, and come in close for the kill… frogs, lizards, birds…. They get fat quickly…see a long slender snake, most likely it’s a fish snake, short and stubby, not good….Of all the snakes, we’ve raised, the Cottonmouth is the baddest, just demonic…stay safe out there..

Those some real nice specimens. I love snakes but stop at the old "best admired from a distance" rule when it comes to venomous versions. My reflexes are just not quite as quick as those guys anymore.

I’ll catch anything I find but have only come across one canebrake. My buddy got the catch but I got the chance to handle it.

When catching venomous, I manipulate them with a traditional snake hook then pin them with an elastic pinner (1/4” latex tubing) so the snakes won’t be injured, then make the grab.

Impressed, but not for me! So how many times have you been bitten? I take it you don't have kids that play in that area, do you?

Never bitten by venomous. Most are far from the house, and I relocate any that are close by.

Might not stop a big canebrake bite but I just don’t come across those, aside from one we’ve caught in N.O. East.
has to be the densest population of canebrakes anywhere.

This may have been addressed 100 times already in other threads, but do you sell the venom, is there a market for the venom?

Yeah my dad used to catch a lot of them there back in the ‘70s when he was a cop in the 7th district. Unfortunately today, when searching for them there the last thing you have to worry about dying from is a snake bite.

I do offer them counseling afterwards, but so far only a few have taken me up on it.

Folsom is loaded with snakes. Have family in Folsom and grew up going over there a lot as a kid. I was always after snakes and we’d find so many snakes out there. Cottonmouths, Copperheads, Pygmy Rattlers, rats, kings, etc. Found probably every type of snake out there except for a Coral. Always wanted to find a Coral Snake.

Wavefan, you put that idea in my head and I road cruised Honey Island tonight. Got a cotton and a rat snake - my first rat at HI (and my first this year).

The cottons has such deep, rich blacks/browns in their head and belly color. The ones in Folsom tend to be more of a tan or light brown in the face and belly. I’ve caught some pretty cottons at HI.

ETA: There was another truck out there cruising as well - was that you?

I get it but damn this is too damn easy. I am going to have let it slide.

By the way, you know that you are crazier than a shithouse rat, right?
