Prettiest cottonmouth I’ve ever seen

The babies are usually colorful, but this lil guy was special - bolder and more orange looking colors without the darker browns. Riskiest catch I’ve made because it was escaping into the sticks and I kept having to grab its tail without seeing where the head was…but I couldn’t let this one get away!
Best of the rest…caught 6 out of 9 cottonmouths. First time on my creek in over 2 months and it was a banger of a day.
This one was first of the day and also a beautiful juvie - just not as striking (pun intended).
Feistiest of the day (will post video of this catch)…
Another looker…

First pic is a juvenile copperhead, the rest look to be moccasins.

Where is this?
What’s your secret to finding so many snakes? I find them here and there but most times I just don’t see them.

Nope, nope, nope
Taxman, don’t argue with tigerrdad about snakes, period , although prior to following these threads and being educated by experts I would of said the same thing, but looking at the pattern the copperhead would have more of a hershey kiss pattern and much smoother and less pixelated borders

When I caught it I told my buddy, “This is the textbook example of why juvie cottons get mistaken for copperheads.”

This is around my land in Folsom. It’s one of the most cottonmouthy spots that I’ve found.
The first secret is just finding the spots that are snakey - been to plenty spots that look good but just don’t have a lot of snakes. You find the good spots through trial and error, word of mouth, or connecting with other herpers. My first 2 months on my land I never saw a single snake. Once I explored enough, I found where they are.
The second secret is just experience in spotting them. My buddy who came with me doesn’t catch snakes but used to go with me when we were kids. Yesterday he spotted the first 6 - and the first 3 were literally within 1 step of me. I was talking the whole time and regaling him with tales of my Friday night escapades and kept almost stepping on cottonmouths. The key to finding them is just to take it slow and be observant.

Precisely. Here are a few pics of a copperhead I caught recently at Honey Island - much cleaner pattern with more clearly delineated borders to the pattern.

The cottons around my property are plentiful but small - I’ve never seen any here bigger than the biggest ones posted - around the 2 ft. range.
Largest I’ve caught was this guy at Honey Island swamp a couple years ago…
…and this one caught road cruising at night in the Everglades a few months ago. I think this one was longer, though the other was a tad thicker.
The head size on those two were remarkably larger than the rest I’ve caught.
Largest I’ve seen was 30 years ago in New Orleans East. Somewhere between 4-5 ft. - more long and relatively slender (or more evenly proportioned) as opposed to short, thick and stout like most. This baw was big. And it is probably the only one that ever made a move in my direction instead of away. He was perched on some sticks, and when we got closer it moved into the water, moved a couple feet in our direction and eyeballed us. There were 3 of us walking on a 2 foot wide pipe down the center of a ditch, with no way to retreat quickly. I guess some people would consider this as being “chased”.

All are caught and released unharmed after a few quick photos.

My dad was bitten, and my uncle was bitten more than once. I never caught venomous when I was still practicing dentistry because I needed my hands, but I’ve been retired a while now.
I’ve considered my previous hobbies like motocross and road racing to be more dangerous. When I’m grabbing venomous snakes, I’m well aware of the mantra “If you frick around, eventually you’re gonna find out.” It just goes with the territory.
