I wasn’t trying to get some super rare extremely expensive coin, just to have something from that time period

I have two, one from Constantine after converting to Christianity and one from his son, who was like a lesser position, maybe a governor. It's a cool hobby, don't let these fools break ya. I'd like to get something from Athens at some point

I bought an ancient Roman coin of Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD) when I was living in Europe in the late 90’s. It wasn’t a mint coin but good enough shape to see what was on both sides of the coin and I probably paid like $30 for it. I have no idea where it is now.

Front side looked like this. Can’t recall the back.

It’s pretty amazing how many coins have survived after all these years. Cool stuff.

I’ve got two.

One came with papers and a display box and some story. Got it in the 80’s and no idea what I paid.

The other is a cool Roman coin from when the Ptolomies ruled Egypt.

Careful who you buy from.

Roman Coin Fraud Arrest

quote:

Richard Beale, the director of a London-based auction house, was arrested in New York City in January on charges relating to his sale of multi-million dollar ancient coins. His arrest has not been previously reported. Beale is the owner and managing director of Roma Numismatics Limited, which claims to be “one of the world’s foremost auction houses for rare and collectible coins,” according to its website.

quote:

Between 2013 and 2014, Vecchi allegedly sold two rare coins to Beale without provenance. One of these is known as an “Eid Mar” coin, referring to an ancient Roman gold coin minted in 42 B.C. to celebrate the assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15 of 44 B.C., commonly referred to as the Ides of March.

I got the next generation males in my clan silver Athenas for Christmas one year.

They were made in Greece before 400 BC.

They were the first attempt to make a City-State have a standardized specie reserve, most of them didn’t actually circulate at the time.

I’ve got a friend who deals in ancient coins, he got me authentic coins.

They look like this-

5 dollars seems strangely reasonable for an ancient coin.

Why all the hate

Looks pretty damn cool

I collect coins

I just like thinking about all the hands it’s passed through and for what and all the history that unfolded around it and stuff.

I can understand your excitement. I am fascinated by things from the past that were actually used by people from the era - things like moccasins or arrowheads from hundreds or thousands of years ago. I don't really desire to own them - but I love to check them out in museums.

Heck even more recent things like they have in the WWII museum - guns, uniforms, tools, etc. They even have a map that was used in the Pacific that still has someone's blood stains on it. Very sobering to see that exhibit.
