I keep seeing ads for Dollar Shave Club and Harry's. Are they any good? Is one better than the other?

I just buy them when I run low.

I didn't like them and generally dislike subscriptions for that kind of thing because my shaving cadence isn't consistent. I ended up landing on a adjustable safety razor and love it.

How do I even know if I want to shave in the future?

Been using Harry's for 6yrs & am very happy with it. The razors are great, and it's like $15 every couple of months. I never have to think about buying them or running out.

Not sure if it's still the case, but Dollar Shave Club used to use blades that were sold on this site, and you could get them much cheaper buying directly.

https://dorcousa.com/

ETA: Scratch that. Looks like they've stopped selling direct to consumer now.

I can only speak for dollar shave club. Even the best razors they offer are absolute trash. I just go to Sam's and get a Giant pack of Gillette fusion razors once a year. They last a long time.

Which?

I have a Merkur Futur and loved it, so I found a Vision on eBay. Turns out it’s broken, and I can’t get the set screw out and have it sitting in a drawer. The Futur is probably one of the most aggressive heads out there, but I despise the handle on that slippery little bastard.

Have used DSC for years. Heritage Series are great razors. I will let the subscription build up spares, because I will never use all 4 in a month and I wont have to buy razors for a year. Got my dad hooked as well.

I bought a 14-pack of Gillette Mach3 Sensitive Disposables in July of 2021 and still have 5 left. Those blades last forever.

Harry's is good quality, considerably better than DSC IMO. Harry's is also an NYC company that did a Gillette-like "men are bad we're going to give your money to orgs that make men less bad" thing. Apparently DSC bizarrely went with some anti-men campaign too, but I never saw it. I understand the general distaste for seeing everything through the lens of politics, but the instinct of men's razor companies to flaunt being anti-masculine is a genuinely weird thing so I don't see this as traditionally political. Nor is it something we availed ourselves of, I was just going along with my little Harry's subscription and minding my business when they started emailing me about how much I sucked.

The Bic "Us" razor isn't a subscription but is about as inexpensive as one and is a very comparable shave IMO.

Just got the 34c for Christmas. Been using the Edwin Jagger DE89L for about 10 years.
In that whole time, I've had to buy a few packs of feather blades and reload on aftershave.

All of the soaps, alum blocks, and brushes I bought initially have lasted.
A few soap tins here, a few shaving creams there, a few soap bowls in the back to see what I like... at this point, I don't know if I'll ever get through all of it in my lifetime.

Safety razors are WAY cheaper in the long run.

guys who run the daily wire created Jeremys razor to try and build off the opposite of the above - i ordered them once and the blades were absolute sheet...i mean worst razors ever

Yeah I saw that and it was pretty cringeworthy. It was similar to a Republican version of how DSC launched, and the razors looked similarly cheap and Chinese (DSC might be better now, but they were pretty junky when I used them). The DSC thing was funny at the time because few were doing that type of viral marketing, but the Jeremys thing just seemed like a bad spoof.

Have to be pretty lazy to not just get a package of Bics at the store every so often. Prep and quality of shaving cream matter the most, best razor in the world isn't going to matter if you just slap cold Barbasol on a dry face.

Don’t like any of them. Started buying big packs of disposable ones from Amazon or Costco and found better success.

This. Spend a little money up front for a quality wet shaving kit, and never worry again about buying these overpriced shitty disposable razors.
