I’m a big fan of Derrick Davis Jr after the bowl game. Looks strong and ran hard. Got defense in his blood! Keep Tolan and Davis!

I would think they are looking at Clayton Smith, the OU transfer. I believe he has at least 3 tears of eligibility remaining, and I'm certain Cain has some familiarity with him from his time at OU.

He was recruited by LSU. He was a 4-5 star that got passed up by a 5 star Freshman and only played garbage minutes for OU with very few statistics. He has four years of eligibility. He could be a depth guy at outside linebacker that maybe someday could live up to his hype. He has not done that yet and needs some development.

Passed up on the depth chart by a low 4 star (.8915 composite), not 5 star Freshman. Mason Thomas 247 Profile

Does he?

Red-shirted in 2020 (played in 4 games) and played in 5 in 2021 (not eligible for red-shirt in 2021). It would appear that he has exhausted at least one year of eligibility. If 2020 counts as "covid year" and not red-shirt year, at best he has 4 to play 3.

His transfer announcement where he thanks OU said 4 but I could be wrong.

Yeah I read that article wrong. His transfer announcement does say 4 years. Not sure if he can play 3-4. Still could be a depth type of player and may blossom with player development.

Quite true, he may blossom in the future with additional development.

However, is this the type of player that the staff is targeting in the portal? I would aver that they are looking for immediate production over projects and this kid is still a project. It is very concerning that a true freshman (who was not an early enrollee) was able to come in and beat him out in his (Smith's) second fall camp, even though Smith was an early enrollee and had been through two springs, two summers, a season, and a completed fall camp already.

Consider the following:

Why has Smith been in the portal now for a month and still has not found a landing spot?

Why did Venables, a noted linebacker coach, let Smith walk after demoting him on the depth chart?

Did you guys think that maybe this wasn't his choice and was a disciplinary issue not him being upset about PT?

Evidently he didn’t play a defensive snap (he did play on ST) in the A&M or UGA games before having no part in the bowl. He was getting a growing number of snaps leading up to that point. It certainly seems like something changed.

Agu looked very impressive all year. Was all over the field and was always at the ball. He caught my eye a lot at the home games.

I like Agu, but it would be hard to pull a pre-med student from Tulane even if they weren’t coming off their best football year ever

I dunno about that. I would think a kid from Dutchtown would be pretty torqued up about getting an offer from LSU.

And here's the thing: he's a Tulane commitment, but WHY HASN'T HE SIGNED? The reasonable inference to draw there is that he's waiting on a better offer.

Which isn't to say that it's forthcoming from LSU, necessarily, but it's possible that he'd be amenable to flipping if Kelly and House made a push for him.

Here's another guy. He isn't in the portal but I would imagine that with a little tampering you could get him here.

Eli Ennis from Nicholls State.

He was the Southland Conference defensive freshman of the year and a freshman all-american. Had 45 tackles and 10 TFL's this year.

Goes 6-2 and 205, so he'd need some work in the weight room. But if you want a Zy Alexander at linebacker, this kid might be that.

Our Defensive Coordinator coached linebackers in the NFL. Why are so many of our linebackers leaving? And why are we not signing more? Sure wish we had the answer on why linebackers don't want to come here and the ones we have are leaving.

Who exactly, other than Tolan, are you complaining about leaving?

Webb and Sampah left in the summer. Webb possibly isn't playing again and Sampah was simply not an SEC linebacker.

Fields wasn't going to see playing time here, even with Tolan leaving.

Little is ok, but it's not like he's a huge loss, either.

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure who else you could even be referring to.

We've had Tolan leave. The rest of the ones who have left were never going to play and they knew it.

Tolan is the only one not fitting that description.

It looks bad because the previous regime missed on just about everybody they recruited for 3 years.

The real question is who we go after to fix the shortage.

There could be numerous reasons for this, including many that have nothing to do with his ability to play football. You cross your fingers and hope he just needs a fresh start
