Is that why they asked to get back into the SEC?

I don't know. But I DO think it's why they almost voted to end their football program entirely in 1985. They did shut down the basketball program for a few years.

Playing the “Winnie’s” is a no win situation. Hell no, do not ever play them.

the fact that the AP poll voted Tulane #25 tells you the AP poll needs to be abolished.

Florida State did it for a long time while building their program back in the 80’s.

Texas A&M did this for 20 years.. Ole Miss did it for a good while too before the 1960s.

Why not home and Dome? I get not wanting to play in their little stadium but alternate BR and superdome.

Because we filled up the dome and they got all the money.

You don’t do a yearly home and away with an AAC team.

The Tulane rivalry was also devolving into a dirty affair with intense bitterness on the field and in the stands. Some games were embarrassing and simply no longer fun.

The Bama and Ole Miss games, for example, are intense and emotional but not a petty thing.

Good riddance.

LSU has three national championships with Saban/Miles/Orgeron in the past 20 years.

Regardless of how their respective departures from LSU played out, they all did bring the coveted hardware back to Campus.

You have to tip your cap to the the LSU Administration that identified them as leaders that could accomplish that at least once each.

While not in the SEC, Tulane should always be competitive in their own conference with its geography and academic offerings.

Unfortunately, they suffered from two assholes named Scott Cowan and Rick Dickson that identified the consecutive talents of Chris Scelfo/Bob Toledo/Curtis Johnson to build something that would actual take a creative plan and hard work (none of those three were ever Head Coaches again for a reason). It is as simple as that.

Tulane finally changed President + AD and found a good Coach in Willie Fritz that took a couple of years to learn the landscape and build a culture. Case in point, Tulane fans are not satisfied with just Bowl appearances any more.

Maybe LSU wins by 24+ if they played this year. Tulane’s Achilles Heel is a mobile QB.

However, Tulane does deserve at least a little hat tip for beating Kansas State on the road by a TD and beating Dana Holgorsen’s team in Houston.

Memphis/Tulsa/SMU is clearly not the gauntlet of Ole Miss/Alabama/Arkansas. However, the Green Wave can build their resume later against a respected Fickell Cincinnati team and a respected Malzahn UCF team.

In my opinion, the rivalry doesn’t make sense to be renewed right now and it should never be played at Yulman.

However, let’s revisit in 5 years and see if Tulane has been able to be a consistent Top 50 program that would present an entertaining non-conference opponent that would NOT harm strength of schedule.

IMO it’s worth it for tradition.

Like I said, I agree about not playing in their cute little on-campus stadium. But the Dome every other year should be a go.

Some posters in this thread have done a good job explaining the logistical and financial reasons why this series was ended.

Another issue is culturally Tulane is a very different school than it was in the 50s to 70s when this rivalry was intense. I've been to recent games at Yulman and Tulane has a good thing going, but if LSU played Tulane this weekend you wouldn't get any of the nostalgia. It would be like LSU playing Duke in football. Not to slag on Tulane but it's just not the same anymore. It's SEC southern school days are long gone. They are good where they are.

we've played Southern exactly once.
LSU should open up every season with Southern or Grambling just for the half-time show.

It's an easy opening "practice" game to work out the kinks and the fans have a reason to stay in their seats to be entertained at the half...........

The original deal with Tulane was a home and home with a 50/50 split gate.

The deal expired but Tulane still wanted rh split gate and LSU wanted to pay Tulane just like any other OOC school.

That ended it.

Because it was home and home. OOC home and home rivalry games are very difficult to support at this point. They not only make your schedule harder but also rob you of home date money once per season.

It’s one thing to accept a UF-FSU home and home as P5 relative equals. Would you give one to a G5 school like Tulame at this point? No one else would. Same thing happened between Ole Miss and Memphis several years ago. They used to play home and home to open every season. UT and Memphis also played home and home off and on.

Those kinds of games have to be 2 for 1 or all home dates for the P5 school now and the G5 party doesn’t always accept that.

Because the NCAA gave them the death penalty for point shaving. That wasn’t voluntary.

As a graduate of both Tulane and LSU, I can honestly say I’m happy to see Tulane have a resurgence in football. For me, it’s cool to see other Louisiana universities get some love in the polls. Yes, even UL.

I think the main take away this year is that there are two really damn good coaches in the state not named Brian Kelly. Mike Desormeaux and Willie Fritz are both really good coaches. Desormeaux will eventually be the hot name when the coaching carousal turns a few years down the road.
