I DID do it, for about 20k a year in mold infested barracks rooms, seeing my family once to twice a year, and "food" that is served in prisons. When you do it, I'll respect your opinion.

Exactly. I love when people who have 0 military experience mention that we were "compensated just like any other job". I remember looking at tax statements after my first 4 years and averaging my pay per hour. After factoring in the average cost of healthcare and BAH, I made around $6/hour. That's with 2 deployments.

Not saying they don’t deserve a pat on the back but people really be overselling the veteran thing. It’s a job and you

That's pretty piss poor attitude to have about people that were willing to put their lives on the line to protect your freedoms.

Do veterans like being singled out like we do now?

Why don't the people that paid their salaries get that?

Taxpayer always gets screwed somehow.

Taxpayers that include people with more dangerous jobs

A roofer is a more lethal and injury prone job than being a member of the armed service today.

Where is their free healthcare?

Well, for now it is. Not sure for how much longer.

You can have a healthy respect for veterans without feeling obligated to say “thank you for your service” every time you see one. Both my father and stepfather saw real action in Vietnam, and I can say with some confidence that the special treatment we see nowadays would make them both uncomfortable.

It has always made me remarkably uncomfortable but I have grown to see myself as a conduit to those that can no longer be told in person because they made the ultimate sacrifice.

the reason the VA is terrible is because they are utterly and hopelessly bogged down with hundreds of thousands of bogus disability claims by entitled vets who are just "getting theirs".

Worked in a kitchen at a base somewhere

Files for total disability because of service

One of my aunts did something similar. And hunts for places with vet pricing. She is a lowlife.

she is not the exception, she is the rule. we have entire courses dedicated to teaching troops how to maximize their disability when they get out or retire. it's fricking disgusting.

I am US Navy retired. 25 years. I feel somewhat qualified to answer this. Most Veterans I know don't actually enjoy getting made over a lot. A simple thank you is fine. Hell, I loved serving in the Navy and I benefitted greatly from it. All the time away and deployments in god awful places(and some good places) were hard on the family and they deserve equal thanks in my opinion. Now, will I take the 10% discount at Lowes? You bet your arse I will. I don't go looking for handouts or gratitude. Also, the ones that talk about it a lot, try to draw attention to themselves, than likely never did it. AND, just because you served doesn't automatically qualify you as a good candidate for public office, Many of those examples both past and present. That said, those that served have something that those that haven't never will! I'm thankful to be here and to have had the opportunity to serve.

It’s a job and you did it. Not for free but for some compensation.

I suppose you weren't around during the days of the draft.

Forced to go into the military with a very good chance of front end duty. I took a cut in pay to go in from a already low paying job because the people with good paying jobs weren't hiring guys that may be drafted. There is more but you wouldn't take time to read and understand.

So, NO, it is not overblown for guys like me.

I ask for nothing more, not even V.A. benefits, but will take what is offered.
