it was supposed to work out as a squib kick..they have the ball on their 35 or so with 3 secs....1 play....they can't reach the endzone on a single throw..

that would have to have been one hell of a squib kick, we were kicking from the 20, they would have still gotten it close to midfield if we squibbed it.

I've always been a Payton supporter, but I actually thought he didn't have one of his better games today. Up 6 points, on a 4th and 2, on the 13 yard line, and we go for it? I know we got it, but if we didn't, that could have been detrimental. I know Mehlhaff missed that extra point, but it was a 30 yard field goal to put us up by 2 possessions. I thought it was unwarranted. Then when, I think Chambers caught that touchdown pass and we challenged it? I thought it was not even close enough to warrant, he easily had both knees inbounds. And finally, the safety. We basically just gave them 2 points and a chance to win. If we just punt in that situation, we can kick it high if we want or angle it, there was 14 seconds on the clock, and it would have easily gotten down to at the least, 8 seconds with the punt, maybe down to 5 depending if he tried to return it. Then, yes, they still get the one hail mary, but at worst, they make it, then have to kick the extra point to go to overtime, or go for 2 and the win.

Taking the safety means no blocked punt. Taking the safety gives us a free kick with less time.

Up by 6 = decent call. Up by 7 = bad call.

I agree with this. But, my guess is that the uncertaintly with the new punter had a lot to do with the decision.

It was absolutely the right call. Duece should have made the block on No.47 instead of looking back at drew. If he makes that block, Crew runs to the corner of the end zone & runs the clock out.

Who would you rather trust, a brand new Australian punter or Drew Brees?

If a backward pass out the end zone results in a safety couldn't Brees have thrown the ball from the line of scrimmage and accomplish the same thing?

I remember an LHSAA playoff game years ago with a similar ending....i want to say st. aug was the team that ended up winning.

the leading team's QB ran toward the endzone to take the intentional safety as time expired and complete an improbably upset of st. aug (they were up by less than a TD at the time). he crossed the goal line as the clock went to 0:00, and celebrated by tossing the ball in the air. unfortunately, he had not taken a knee or run out of the endzone when he tossed the ball.

one of the st. aug defenders had chased him all the way into the endzone and caught the ball out of the air. touchdown and victory st. aug. this would have been during the the mid 90's. anyone else remember this?

Did you watch the game? Damn, get your story straight before posting that stupid shite. We were up by 7, not 6, Vincent Jackson caught the TD, not Chambers. And, finally, all you jacktards need to shut the frick up and enjoy that we won a game and stop nit picking the frick out of a play that WAS THE RIGHT CALL. Had it been executed a little better (by that I mean blocking), then Drew could have ran the clock down to at least 3 seconds or better. And yes he was the right man for the play, not the NEW punter we just signed.

Some people just don't know concepts and strategy and bitch no matter what. If we won by 40, there would still be some damn saintards on here ranting about something.

maybe you need better reading comprehension tard, I wasn't talking about the end of the game when we took the safety, rather a play earlier in the game when we were up by 6 on their 13 yard line.

Pretty sure I said I wasn't sure who caught it, but who caught it was also irrelevant to my point.

So, it was the right call because we won? So, would it have been the wrong call if the hail mary was successful for San Diego? I am just doing what people do when we lose, questioning the coaching decision. Figured maybe I could get the point across that coaching decisions are what they are regardless of the outcome of the game.
