Finally, it made a big difference to the people of color we interviewed when an ally tried to get to know them better as a person, not only in terms of work.
Look at that bullshite....hey I'll do better if you be my friend outside of work.
bullshite.

Pieces of shite come in many colors, so do fine upstanding human beings. Maybe people don't like other shitty people, and would gladly stand-up for, and support, good people.
The head chef at a local restaurant I frequent was in a car wreck recently and I'm going to be helping out with a fundraiser to help pay his hospital bills, because I like the guy and he is a great cook. Him being black has no bearing one way or the other on my willingness to help him.

Why do they need my support? Are they not capable of supporting themselves? I don’t go around looking for people’s support. I do just fine on my own thank you very much.

step 1 to get support from white colleagues: quit bitching.

Past research has found that white supervisors often avoid giving critical feedback to Black subordinates and peers out of a fear of being viewed as biased. Yet it can be more biased to say nothing. Avoiding difficult conversations can impede a young professional’s upward mobility.
People of color need advice from more experienced individuals on how to successfully navigate racism traps that may exist in the workplace. They might be unaware that some of their actions or approaches are being perceived negatively in the office. These difficult conversations can strengthen relationships.
yeah...okay

Give critical feedback, you're a whitesplaining racist.
Don't give critical feedback, you're a non-supportive racist.

Small acts of reckless disregard
So, white people have to be more careful about their speech to blacks. But they can talk freely to Mexicans, Asians and other Whites?
If I were black I'd consider that condescension.

It really is that simple. Until people decide to assimilate themselves simply as Americans, there will be this silly nonsense and division till the end of time. Labels and hyphens are tools to divide and separate.
I treat anyone like I would want to be treated. The minute you start bringing out crutches, I'm out. It's 2022. If you truly believe that in 58 years this country has not become equal, you will never believe it.

So if we don’t give critical feedback, we’re racist. But if we do give critical feedback we’re racist and we’ve opened ourselves up for a racial discrimination lawsuit.

Us whites are just racists, no matter what we do. It's apparently in our DNA and none of us are any different than the other.

Black people even experience bias from well-meaning schoolteachers, neighbors, colleagues, and managers. Small acts of reckless disregard build toward broad racial disparities.
Acts of racism so small and ingrained that we can’t ever give examples

So like assuming a black person is too stupid or inept to get an ID so they can vote? That kind of racism?
But, need that same ID to get a vaccine

White supremacists storming the Capitol? Hard to take the article seriously when it's fraught with such microaggressions.

I have had blacks and women express that I was talking down to them or mansplaining when I was just helping the way I have always helped everyone.
It is ridiculous. Most of the time, those case the person was clueless and needed help. Regardless, why get offended? I have often had people explain things to me that I already knew. I politely listen and work through what is being explained if it isn't going to take a long time, or I politely express I have experience in the subject, if it is time consuming.
Just be nice.
