I think 8 teams would be fine and will happen, but your logic is flawed.

I am a fan of 8 teams in the playoffs as well.
There have been several times where teams 5-8 probably could have made the CFB Championship game, Wisconsin in 17, TCU in 14, Iowa in 15, UCF IN 17.
Not saying they would have won the championship, but they could have made it interesting in the quarter and semi final games.
