LSU has only 5 schools including A&M that are less than 500 miles. Missouri is about the same distance for LSU as KY and SC.

Why wouldn't we include A&M? They're a part of it now. BTW, including A&M the average distance from the West schools is 610.7. Throw Mizzou in the East and let's be done with it. Also, I like how we're all hung up on geography when Texas A&M is only closer than Florida and USC to Mizzou The old Big XII had some crazy trips from North to South.

You must have only visited Kansas City or (more likely) St. Louis to make a stupid remark like this.

Our numbers are slightly different but here is something I came up with awhile back when looking at adding both A&M and Missouri to show that Missouri is not actually as far away as people think.
Here are the numbers for Missouri and A&M.
Columbia to:
Fayetteville, AR - 311
Nashville, TN - 433
Lexington, KY - 459
Oxford, MS - 477
Starkville, MS - 576
Knoxville, TN - 609
Tuscaloosa, AL - 620
Auburn, AL - 733
Athens, GA - 734
Baton Rouge, LA - 772
Columbia, SC - 871
Gainesville, FL - 1,009
Avg Distance from Columbia: 633.67 miles
College Station, TX to:
Baton Rouge, LA - 364
Fayetteville, AR - 512
Oxford, MS - 566
Starkville, MS - 575
Tuscaloosa, AL - 630
Nashville, TN - 756
Auburn, AL - 780
Knoxville, TN - 940
Gainesville, FL - 948
Athens, GA - 949
Lexington, KY - 968
Columbia, SC - 1,094
Avg. Distance from College Station: 756.83 miles

I've been to eight of the existing SEC college towns plus both College Station and Columbia (MO), and I have to agree, the culture is very different in Columbia, MO.
I liked Columbia, thought it was a nice place. People were okay in a reserved kind of way. But to me, it felt mid-western, not southeastern, and the school spirit was lacking.
Missouri is an okay addition (a lot better than WVU), but to me it didn't feel like other SEC towns.

i think it's a given that we are going to have to teach our new brethren something about culture. maybe through a series of "southern culture" documentaries that can be available on dvd or even short takes on utube. maybe we can have guest visitor programs where they make a trip to our area for an indoctrination and they actually stay in our trailor and socialize with our family, dawgs and friends. having an english/redneck dictionary would be a help too. i think jeff foxworthy has one out that should be required reading. i'm sure we can come up with other ideas to assist them in assimilating into the SEC.

Hell of a travel tab anyway you look at it. Still something about Missouri that just doesn't feel geographically correct, but that's just me.

Thank you. Southern Missouri is nothing like KCMO or STL. Very different feel to the region.

But didn't you also say several times that no one in Southern Missouri cares about Mizzou?

Yeah but that doesn't mean they aren't different from KCMO or STL. We mostly have Razorback and OU fans here. That tells you they LOVE college football. We have a good portion of Southerners from Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas in this area.
ETA: Norman,OK is only about 3hrs away and Fayetteville,AR a lil over an hour. Much closer to us than Columbia so that might explain it.lol.

Mizzou is not a good fit for the SEC

Not a good fit because of what. Hell they already proved they can compete with SEC teams in the past, present, and in Bowl games. Hell this is Mizzou beating mighty SEC schools.
Now unless you're talking about too far North then I agree, but athletics wise you'd be surprised Mizzou has held their own against the SEC. That's probably one of the reasons why the SEC is looking towards them, they know the school actually gave SEC teams good games in the past.

Living in Springfield now, I would say I have just as easy a time finding Hog fans as Mizzou fans. I would guess the town is 40% Hog fans, 40% Mizzou fans and 20% OU/KU fans.

They've done well in the past, but there's a difference in getting up for a game and playing an SEC schedule. At best, they'll be like Arkansas (but not on a regular basis). At worst they'll be like whichever team is worst out of UK/MSU/OM in any given year (but possibly on a regular basis).

I'm in Joplin. Mostly Hogs and Sooners here. You see Mizzou merchandise in stores but you hardly see people buying it up or wearing them. Kinda sad...

It blew me away how many fans of Arkansas and OU there were in Springfield. I assumed I was moving in to the heart of Tiger country but that definitely wasn't the case.
If people knew the towns breakdown first hand they wouldn't see it as a surprise that DGB might actually choose Arkansas over MU or OU because it is as much the cities team as MU.
