Officials I’ve talked to within the SEC have been adamant that they’re not interested in raiding conferences. But that doesn’t mean the SEC won’t listen if other schools make it known that they’re interested in changing addresses.

There were strong rumblings that Florida State was going to make a pitch to be the 14th team in the SEC had Texas A&M come aboard.

But with Texas A&M staying put, the SEC will stand pat for the time being.

I'm assuming we would have added a conference game, A&M and Florida State would have been permanent East-West opponents, and there would have still been two rotating cross-division games each year.

That would have been the PERFECT scenario.

I agree. I wasn't in favor of expanding, but if the SEC were to do so, adding A&M and Florida State would be like you said - Perfect.

I guess you mean they would have gone to 9 sec conference games per year?

You could be right - but it would lose money from home gates/ooc games and mean more guaranteed losses for the conference as a whole

So, I'm guessing it would have still been 8 conference games with one permanent opp division opponent and one rotating opp division opponent

True, but when you renegotiate the TV deal (b/c of the added teams) you can sell them on more conf games ... perhaps that would have ben used to recoup some of the money lost from the rent-a-wins

I like the idea of a 14-team conference. In football, you get 6 games (3 home, 3 away) in your division and 2 games (1 home, 1 away) against the other division. Nice and balanced. Do away with permanent other division opponents, and you can get a home and home with all 7 teams in a 7 year period.

maybe - but the real programs (like most of the SEC) generate millions in revenue from each home game

and whatever additional revenue is generated is split up between more teams

as much as i like playing florida every year- its complete bullshite in years like 06 where arkansas' permanant opponent is a cupcake and we lose to florida and they win the west.

it would even things out across the west- then, winner plays the best in the east. i like it

SEC can lay low for now
14 teams is on the horizon
at that time, Fla St and possibly someone like Missouri could be targets

Missouri would bolt in a heartbeat right now if they could, that would give Ark a rivalry

If I was Kansas, Kansas St I might strongly consider a Mountain West offer because they will be left out again next expansion go round

Auburn, UGA, Tenn and Alabam would shoot down any expansion plan taking away their rivalry games. Any SEC expansion plan will have to take that into account.

I see your point but South Carolina isn't what I would consider being a cupcake opponent and Arkansas had only 1 conference loss at the end of regular conference play. SC was pretty good in '06.

I am pretty sure late last week the SEC said they would not take any additional schools for a state that already had an SEC team in it. Thus precluding FSU. Thats why the speculation was VT or UNC.

8-5, 3-5 in the SEC. some OOC wins: wofford, middle tenn, florida atlantic. SEC wins over vandy, kentucky, and moo st. we must have different definitions of pretty good

Florida State would bring absolutely nothing to the SEC. Virginia Tech would bring a lot and be a much better addition.

Florida already has the Florida State television market. Virginia Tech would bring D.C. and others on the East Coast. And Virginia Tech has a better football team.

If you're talking about starting a cable network a la Big 10 and cable fees, that applies. FSU is a national program with a larger fanbase then VaTech. FSU brings in more total viewers to a network/cable TV deal.
