Venables to Oklahoma being finalized

My first reaction is that this isn't going to work.

I just think it’s funny OU boards are saying how much better of a hire this is than Riley

Venables will have a team that keeps opponents to less than 20 ppg most years. I figure he will find OC’s who can field an offense that will score 30+ ppg. That combo keeps OU solidly as a top 15/20 team year in and year out with the potential to make a title run every few years. What more could you realistically expect?

I’d be excited (or at least relieved) if I were an OU fan. Venables has been the best DC in college football for years and worked under one of the best culture builders in the sport. I don’t get the poo pooing either.

You don’t see that as a downgrade compared to where they’ve been for years.

Makes sense, their defenses couldn't even defend a hotdog stand under heavy duress in the French Quarter by Rosie O' Donnel.

Respectable hire. They are preparing for SEC.

Why is Venables to Oklahoma a masterpiece? He could be the next Kirby Smart or he could be the next Will Muschamp. I wouldn’t call a massive gamble a masterpiece. It worked out with Lincoln Riley but it’s far from a guarantee, especially in the tougher SEC.

Wasn’t Venebales fired by OU when he and Stoops were co-defensive coordinators?

Why would OU want a career coordinator to be their next head coach?
uh, their previous head coach was hired as a coordinator, with no head coaching experience.

Not saying he’d be bad, but odd Oklahoma going for a defensive guy.

Well their defenses have always been horrible so there’s that

Is it really masterful? Looks like a snap decision to me

How can you tell? I think every AD should have his plan in place to replace every coach at a money sport. Woodward should know before the season starts who is his hire in football, basketball and baseball at a minimum. If a coach dies, quits, fricks a goat on TV, whatever, he should pick up the phone and start negotiating.
