Sterlin Gilbert will be the next McNeese State head coach, sources told FootballScoop on Wednesday barring any unforeseen issues. Gilbert was also a candidate for the Texas State job, which ultimately went to West Virginia offensive coordinator Jake Spavital. Gilbert has spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator at South Florida, and prior to that spent a season with Charlie Strong at Texas in the same capacity.

Great hire. So glad they opened it up and went outside the family

He has a good background and offensive mind.

Very satisfied

Just read the USF boards. They’re thankful he’s gone because his lackluster offense this year.

Nevermind the offense when he has a QB that is capable. With a competent QB, South Florida averaged 517 ypg. Funny how a QB can make or break you.

Fickle arse football fans can’t grasp that.

I'm sorry, I passed out from shock. Did McNeese just hire a football coach with no McNeese or Lawton/Dore ties?

About frickin time.

Will probably have good recruiting ties in Texas. Looks like a good hire for McNeese.

He should’ve been our OC two years ago.

In Florida as well.

But his Texas ties are huge between being a QB in Texas, a HS coach in Texas, the OC at UT. I’m sure he has a lot of contacts. Hopefully he will reach out farther than the last 5 head coaches have.

I am waiting to see what he can do with that freshman QB, Cam Smith, who redshirted this past season

Agreed. Kid is a winner. He didn’t get much opportunity to throw the ball in HS based on his stats, but being the QB at American Heritage speaks for itself, IMO. Hopefully he can translate that to the college level.
